YOU were sitting in the cafeteria before school with your earbuds flowing music into your ears. It was unclear what you were listening to the people walking by. You sketched in your notebook, waiting for the minutes to go by. Hoping the bell would ring soon and school would start and you wouldn't feel so nervously alone.
Someone came up from behind you and you almost jumped. "Varian!" you shouted, both surprised and angry.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to surprise you." you instantly realized that you had forgotten to close your book and you snapped the cover shut. "What are you doing?" Varian asked. You had a nervous panic, what did he mean? Had he seen the drawings?
"Um, it's nothing," you said and your pencil fell off of the table. You went to reach for it and Varian took the book. You instantly snapped back up with the pencil in your hand, "Don't-"
"You're a really good artist," he said and then you got confused. He wasn't going to criticize your art? He wasn't going to laugh at how crappy and rushed all of the led strokes were? You didn't know how to react to that.
"Uh, thanks?" you questioned. He kept skipping through the pages and you were waiting in anticipation of the moment that he would find the one of him.
"Who is this?" he asked, rhetorically.
"You," you told him. You honestly wanted to go home already, a feeling that you didn't feel until after lunch on a normal day. This was not a normal day, you had someone complimenting your art, that you drew of them.
"It's really good," he said laughing a little bit. You liked his laugh but not enough to give you any less anxiety about someone laughing about your work.
"See I knew you would have laughed at it!" you told yourself mostly, but also Varian.
"I'm not laughing at your art!" he said in defense, "I'm just laughing about how nervous you are about showing your art. Why were you so scared?"
"I just-I guess I find it hard to let new people in, okay? Plus I don't think my art is anything remarkable," you said.
"You'll have to show me how to draw like you," he said.
"But you're already a good artist." you contradicted.
"What?"
"Um, I saw one of your drawings a long time ago, it was for a certain fairytale, right?"
"Rapunzel," he said, remembering.
"Yeah, it was great!"
"Thanks." You could tell that he was now nervous and you weren't exactly sure why.
The bell rang and you ended your short conversation. "I guess I'll see you around?" you asked.
"Yeah, sure. See you around too!" he said and both of you turned away. Your cheeks completely red with both embarrassment and pride.
