crossing the line

I've been waiting so long to do this. But a thought came into my head...

I won't wait...

"ALL I have to do it grab it?" You wondered. It didn't seem that hard. You reached out to grab the moonstone, you were unsure what was going to happen to you, but you knew it was going to keep your kingdom safe and that's all that mattered. You just needed to reach for it and then a black glove intercepted your path. "Varian! No!" You looked at him as he absorbed all of the moonstone's energy.

"I didn't want to have to do this, but you'll have to understand it was the only way," he said. His hair now a bright blue and his eyes glowing.

"No, we can figure something out together. I know we can." you pleaded. This wasn't the only way, you were going to have to stop Varian if he didn't choose to help you, and you didn't want to have to fight him.

"It's over," he said and he ran out of the room. Black rock spikes jutted out from the ground and you tried to dodge them as you ran after him.

"Varian! This has to stop now! Whatever it is that you're going through, we'll fix it together, me and you, just like we've always done!" you called out to him.

"No! This has to stop now! This thing where you think that you've been my friend, and don't even hear how you condescend, the way you've always done!" he said, stopping to retaliate.

"Please Varian, listen." you wished that he didn't just take the moonstone, but you didn't have a choice on whether or not you wanted to be kind. You weren't ready to say goodbye.

    "I'm listening."

"I know it isn't true," you said, hoping to trick yourself into believing that the moment had never happened.

"Isn't it?" he said, and you walked closer to him. If only you could reach out to him, but you were still too far away.

"Just look into my eyes now..."

     "Well?"

"...I know you feel it too."

"Perhaps I do." he softly said and you saw a bit of regret in his eyes.

       "Varian, listen."

       "I'm listening," he said, impatiently.

"I swear it's not too late. So, before another line gets crossed, and everything we've had is lost...just wait..." you began to say.

"Wait? No, I won't wait!" Varian said and a gate of black rocks was formed. You looked through them and you desperately wanted to get to the other side.

       "Varian!" you shouted.

He continued to walk away, you hoped that there was a way to get him back. "There's a line between the winners and the losers. There's a line between the chosen and the rest." You knew you could get over there if you tried. "And I've done the best I could, but I've always known just where we stood." You used your hair to help you up to the top and you helped your self down.

"Me here with the luckless, you there with the blessed." You saw a flash of blue and you realized that more and more of the rocks were forming with each step of his. "And that line between the beggars and the choosers, is a line you never let me quite ignore."

You were so close, you couldn't turn back now. "How I've tried to jump that great divide, but I've never got the chances you were given! You don't know how much I've been denied! Well, I'm not being patient anymore...I'm crossing the line."

It was with those words that everything was beginning to sink in, was there really going to be nothing between you? Was this goodbye? "And I'm done holding back. So look out, clear the track, it's my turn! I'm taking what's mine! Every drop, every smidge! If I'm burning a bridge, let it burn! But I'm crossing the line...as for us, if we're over that's fine!"

"Varian, wait!" you said as you walked on the large bridge of rocks.

"I'm crossing the line," he said, and he turned the other way and used the rocks to form a bridge above the cliff's formations. You sat down on the glowing stones, thinking about a way to fix what had been damaged. Was there any way to mend the divide between you two?
