Chapter Thirteen

Em woke me up the next morning for school, reminding me to be quiet so that I wouldn't accidentally wake Jared. I dressed as quickly as I could and headed downstairs to where Embry was eating breakfast.

'Ready to go back to school?' I asked him, grabbing some food.

'Not really' he replied 'I'm not sure who to spend time with since I'm not supposed to spend time with my old friends'

'You can hang with me when you're not in class' I offered.

'Thanks, I may end up taking you up on that. You're gonna be the only one there who knows anything'

'Cos I'm amazing, I know' I smirked 'Kay so I'm gonna go grab my stuff then we'll head off okay?'

'Alright, my stuffs here so just waiting on you'

It only took me a few moments to finish getting ready for school and search for the keys to Sams car. It was a burgundy Jeep Cherokee, not the most fancy car in the world, but it worked. Embry and I climbed in and headed off to school, swinging along to the radio the whole way.

'Have a good day at school kiddo, text or call if you want me' I told him, heading over to Tara, Lucy, and Abi.

'Hey Katie! Where's Paul?' Tara asked.

'He's home' I replied, hoping they wouldn't ask for more details.

'Wait, you can be separated for this long?' she teased.

'Oh shush, we're nowhere near that bad and you know it'

'Who were you riding to school with anyway?' Lucy asked as we began to head into school.

'Embry Call, he's in the year below us'

'He's cute' she laughed, 'Wait, why did he come with you? Why were you driving?'

'He needed a lift so I gave him one, I was driving cos Paul and Jared aren't in today' I said, sitting down in our form class.

The day went by pretty normally, Embry was MIA at break and lunch but he texted me to say that he was hiding out from his friends. He was waiting for me at the car at the end of the day.

'Come on kid, time to get you home. You got work to do'

'Don't remind me! I'm with Jared right?' he asked.

'Yeah, you are. Good luck'

'Thanks. I haven't really done official work in my wolf form yet. Most of my time was spent controlling how to phase' he confessed.

'Is it difficult to do?' I asked him.

'More painful than anything. I don't really find it fun to do at all'

'Sorry you have to go through that'

'Not your fault Katie, you seem like the type who'd kill every vampire you could just to prevent us from phasing' he laughed.

'What can I say, I'm protective of my family' I told him as we pulled into the driveway.

'Aw, aren't you adorable' he grinned.

'I will punch you' I threatened.

'Don't test her Embry, she will do it!' Paul laughed, coming out to meet us.

'Wait, hold the gross stuff till I'm gone' Embry said, running in to the house.

As soon as he had gone, I was pulled in to a kiss from Paul which I eagerly returned. It wasn't until I pulled away that I noticed how exhausted he looked.

'Have you not slept yet?' I asked him.

'No, I wanted to wait and see you'

'Alright, come on, lets go and nap for a bit'

I pulled him into the house and led him upstairs to the room he had claimed as his.

'Bed' I told him, pushing him down on the bed.

'Join me?' he asked.

I kicked off my shoes and laid down beside him, yawning already - I didn't think I was that tired! We fell asleep pretty quickly and didn't wake up again until Same came looking for us.

'Wake up' he demanded.

Paul and I just groaned at him and snuggled deeper under the warm covers.

'I'll pull the covers off' he threatened.

'Paul, Katie, wake up!'

He sighed heavily.

'Right, well you asked for it'

He came over to the bed and pulled the covers off us, exposing us to the cold air, making me squeal and attach myself to Paul who was still really nice and warm.

'What do you want Sam?' I asked.

'Dinner time. Em shouted but you didn't respond so I came up to get you'

'Food sounds good' Paul replied, yawning as he stood up.

I jumped on his back and his quick reflexes caught me.

'What the hell Kitty Kat?!'

'Carry me'

'Fine' he sighed, carrying me downstairs.

We sat down to fish and chips, well I only had chips since I don't like fish. Sam and Paul filled Emily and I in on what was happening on the patrols they were conducting - which wasn't a lot right now. But they had also been keeping an eye on Jacob Black. Sam reckons he'll be phasing any day now and it could be dangerous as he's been spending a lot of time with Bella Swan - the vampire chick. Emily bet it wouldn't be till next week but I said it would be some time this weekend. If I lost, I had to buy the next food shop, if Emily lost, she had to let me eat as much junk food as I wanted for a day (she limited how much chocolate and sweets I was allowed).

'What time am I patrolling again Same?' Paul asked.

'Not until 5 again. I'm going to try work it so we do 12 hour patrols' Sam replied.

'You trying to kill us?'

'I know it's not ideal at the moment but it's necessary until we figure out what the red headed bloodsucker wants, or there's more of us'

'I should probably go to sleep then' Paul sighed.

'You need to sleep as well Sam, you look exhausted' I told him.

'Alright, we'll both go to sleep. Don't let Katie stay up too late Em, she has school tomorrow. And get Embry to go straight to bed as well please' Sam told Emily, kissing her and heading to bed.

'Night Emily, night Kitty Kat' Paul said, kissing me then following Sam.

'Come on Katie, we'll get this place cleaned up while the boys are out and asleep' Emily told me.

We cleaned downstairs top to bottom, except hoovering, and the place was nice and tidy. Then |Emily decided to go and watch TV so I joined her but did some homework instead - Sam wouldn't be happy if I got in to trouble at school. It was about 10 when Embry returned from patrol and he looked knackeered so Emily sent him straight to bed and I followed him soon after.
