Chapter Twenty Four

Sam had called a pack meeting to discuss the upcoming battle against the newborn vamps. I was still pissed as hell with him but Paul had told me I had to play nice. I curled up next to him on the sofa.

'So as everyone knows, the vampires are coming for Bella and we promised to help the Cullens fight them' Sam started, 'Jacob is going to take Bella to a safe place before the fight and then Seth will take over to protect them, give them a link to the pack, and stay out of trouble'

'Wait, protect them?' I asked.

'Edward is sitting out the fight' Jacob told me with an eye roll.

'What is happening with Emily, Kim, and Katie while we're all off fighting?' Embry asked.

'The newbies will patrol the house but I don't think they will be needed' Sam told us.

'Newbies? What newbies?' I asked, confused.

'Two new wolves phased a few days ago. Collin and Brady. They haven't phased back yet which is why you haven't met them yet. When they do they will join you and Seth for tutoring' Sam informed me.

'Has the psychic vamp seen when this fight is going to happen?' Quil asked Jacob.

'This Friday, everything is in place and ready' Jacob replied.

Noone said anything so I decided to speak up and say what was on my mind.

'You guys will be careful right. Like you won't get yourselves killed or anything will you?'

All of them laughed at me but I could see that Emily and Kim were worried as well. This was a big deal for us. The pack was our family and I knew I didn't want to lose any of them.

'We'll be fine Kitty. We have each others back, you don't need to worry baby' Paul reassured me, giving me a hug.

I burrowed my head in to his chest and breathed in his scent, trying to memorise it. I hated that they had been pulled in to this fight. I hated Bella for dragging them in to this because of her reluctance to let Jacob go when she was with another man. The pack went their own ways and Paul headed up to my room.

'I'll meet you there in a second' I told him softly.

I followed Sam and Emily in to the kitchen

'Sam?' I asked hesitantly.

He turned and looked at me expectantly.

'I still hate you for lying to me Sam but don't die during the fight okay?' I told him.

'Don't worry Katie, we'll be fine. This is what we were created for.' Sam reassured me.

'Doesn't stop us all from worrying' Emily agreed with me.

'We will all be fine' Sam repeated.

I headed up to my room to join Paul. We laid side by side on the bed, looking up at the ceiling.

'I really wish you weren't fighting Paul'

'I know baby, but orders are orders'

'I get that. Even if Sam said you could sit it out I would never ask that of you. I couldn't do what Bella has done. This fight is needed, we need to win to protect humans' I said.

'You know me too well Kitty'

Every day up to the fight, the wolves were out in the woods practising how to fight while Emily, Kim, and I were stuck in the house to 'protect us'. I was going slightly stir crazy not being allowed to leave and nothing I tried was distracting me for long enough. I tried reading, working, writing, cleaning, but nothing worked. Collin and Brady hadn't shifted back yet either so I couldn't even distract myself by tutoring them. When the wolves weren't training, they were either sleeping or outside of Bellas house on guard while the Cullens fed so they could keep up their strength before the fight. I barely got to see Paul at all which made the whole thing worse.

Friday finally came, the pack were ready for the fight and they were excited where as I was a mess. I was internally freaking out and panicking that one of them was going to get hurt. Or killed. That would destroy the whole pack.

Collin and Brady were already outside the house keeping a lookout as the others got ready to leave.

'I love you Kitty. I'll be back soon' Paul promised, kissing me softly before joining the pack outside to head to the site of the fight.

'And now we wait' I said.

'And now we wait' Kim agreed, sitting next to me on the sofa.

We sat there in silence with something random playing on the TV in the background whilst Emily cooked continuously. We didn't hear anything until late afternoon when Collin and Brady came rushing into the house.

'We need to get to the Black house, Jacob got injured' Collin told us.

We all rushed out to the car and I drove as fast as possible to the Black house. The whole pack was waiting and I threw myself at Paul when I saw that he was safe.

'I'm okay Kitty' he reassured me, rubbing soothing circles on my back as I refused to let him go.

'What happened to Jake?' I asked when I had pulled away.

He went to answer but a gut wrenching scream came from the house. The pack flinched at the sound. I noticed Sam was missing but Billy was outside with us and Sue Clearwater.

'A vamp got him. Broke all his bones down one side and they healed wrong so the elder Cullen, the doctor, is having to rebreak them so they can set properly' Paul explained.

That was horrible!

'Sam is inside with Jacob' Embry told us, pulling Emily into a hug as she looked very distraught.

We'd all been there, waiting, for about a half hour when Bella decided to show up. I was furious when I saw her, this was her fault. Before anyone could stop me, I had walked over to her and slapped her. Hard.

'How dare you show up here?! It's your fault Jake is like this! If it wasn't for you stringing him along then he wouldn't have almost died trying to protect you. You nearly destroyed my family and yet you don't even care because it doesn't directly involve you. Well news flash Bella Swan, the world doesn't revolve around you!' I ranted at her.

She didn't say a word. Nobody did but I could see several members of the pack looking at me with a small smile on their face. Paul pulled me in to a tight and comforting hug as we continued to wait.

Doctor Cullen and Sam came out not long after and told us Jake was okay.

'The worst is over. He'll be alright. I gave him some morphine, but his body temperature will burn it off soon. I'll come back to set up a drip' Dr Cullen told us.

'Thank you' Billy said to him before he could leave, and offered him a hand to shake. It was a hard thing for Billy to do, I was proud of him.

'He's asking for you' Doctor Cullen told Bella.

I growled as she looked at Billy and then ran in to the house to see Jacob.

'We should go home, will you be okay Billy?' Sam asked.

'I'll stay with him' Sue reassured him.

'Thanks Sue. Everyone head home and get a Good nights rest. Come by the house tomorrow when you wake up Sam tells the pack, 'Come on Katie, I'll drive us home'

Paul and I got in to the car with Sam and Emily. I curled up next to Paul and slowly fell asleep as we made our way hone.

'I've got Katie' I heard Paul tell them softly.

He lifted me out the car and carried me up to bed.
