Mercedes slowly opened her eyes. The sound of a baby crying pulled her from her sleep. Jerome shuffled and slightly groaned. Mercedes set up.
"It's Jessie.. I'll get him. Go back to sleep."
Jerome set up and gently rubbed her back.
"I can get him doll face. You can go back to sleep."
Mercedes gently kissed Jerome's cheek.
"That's okay. Thank you."
Mercedes sighed at Jerome laughed.
"Now Aislinn's awake. Let me help."
Mercedes laughed. They both stood up and walked to the other side of the room.
"It's not like we have to leave the room."
Jerome and Mercedes picked up their babies and set on their bed holding them close. Jerome set quietly whenhe heard Mercedes start to sing.
Why are there so many
Songs about rainbows
And what's on the other side
Rainbows are visions
They're only illusions
And rainbows have nothing to hide
So we've been told and some chose to
Believe it
But I know they're wrong wait and seeSomeday we'll find it
The Rainbow Connection
The lovers, the dreamers and meWho said that every wish
Would be heard and answered
When wished on the morning star
Somebody thought of that
And someone believed it
And look what it's done so far
What's so amazing
That keeps us star gazing
What so we think we might seeSomeday we'll find it
That Rainbow Connection
The lovers the dreamers and meHave you been fast asleep
And have you heard voices,
I've heard them calling my name,
Is this the sweet sound that calls
The young sailors,
The voice might be one and the same.
I've heard it too many times to ignore it
It's something that i'm supposed to be,Someday we'll find it
The rainbow connection...
The lovers, the dreamers and me
La lala la lala la la la lala la la laMercedes sang a lot and it was Jerome's favorite thing. He knew that if she wasn't with him she could have been a famous singer. Her soft singing put the babies right back to sleep. They carefully put the babies back in their cribs. Mercedes set next to Jerome on the bed.
"Did you ever think you'd be a father...?"
Jerome turned to face her.
"Honestly... I didn't expect to live as long as I did until I died the first time.. and with my track record.. I always felt I'd be shitty at it.."
Mercedes laughed slightly.
"What..? Are you laughing at me?"
Mercedes looked at Jerome and he was smiling. That's where all this had started. That smile. Mercedes straddled his lap and He instantly grabbed her hips. Mercedes ran her fingers through his hair. Jerome stared into her eyes. Mercedes smiled and then gave him a blank stare after looking at the clock.
"Today was the day you killed my brother."
"I'm not sorry I killed someone. I'm just sorry it was your brother..."
Jerome reached his hand up and placed her hair behind her ear. He gently rubbed her cheek with his thumb. Mercedes slowly nodded before leaning in and gently pressing her lips to his. Mercedes and Jerome had come to an understanding of each other that no one else could ever understand. They both had done bad things, but there was an understanding and acceptance due to the level of just enough humanity behind it. Mercedes scooted closer in his lap. Jerome propped his pillows up to where he was sitting comfortably. Mercedes had her legs wrapped around his waist. The second he turned his head back to look at her, he felt her lips. Jerome pulled the blanket over them. Mercedes scrunched her arms into his chest and laid her head on his shoulder. Jerome wrapped his arms around her. Jerome laid there with his head leaned against hers. A few minutes later he could hear her breathing had slowed down. She fell asleep. Jerome gently rubbed her back. Before he knew it, he had fallen back asleep.
