"Daddy!"
Mercedes snapped the last lid on a container. She turned to see Jerome slowly walking into the kitchen.
"Morning.."
Mercedes gave him a polite smile.
"Good morning.. I see you put ice on your nose. The slight swelling has gone down."
Jerome laughed a little.
"I knew you'd get on to me if I didn't.. What's that?"
Jerome was pointing towards the containers. Mercedes picked them up and handed them to Jerome. He could see some waffles and cereal. Mercedes gave him a weak smile.
"They begged me to let them take the rest of breakfast.."
Jerome nodded.
"Well you know in another hour they'll be hungry again. They can definitely finish this. Thank you."
Aislinn ran into Jerome with her bag. Jerome laughed.
"Tooth brush? Extra underwear? I'm trying to make sure you didn't just pack some toys."
Aislinn pouted.
"Daddy!"
He raised his eyebrow.
"Go get Abbe to help you please."
Aislinn ran into the hallway.
"Abbe!"
Jerome turned back to Mercedes.
"I'll have them back tomorrow before bed."
Mercedes shook her head.
"No no. You can keep them overnight tomorrow too."
Jerome tiled his head.
"Are you sure?"
Mercedes smiled and nodded.
"Yes. You asked for two whole days. You can have two whole nights too."
"You aren't going to miss them?"
Mercedes laughed and sighed.
"I miss them already and they haven't even left yet, but they deserve enough time with their dad."
Aislinn and Jessie came running into the kitchen.
"Daddy let's go!"
Mercedes walked them into the living room. The twins hugged her.
"Bye mommy."
Mercedes kissed them both.
"Behave. Do what daddy tells you okay? Don't make him have to call me because you won't listen. Have fun. I love you. I'll miss you. See in a couple of days."
The twins hugged their mom one last time. Jerome swallowed.
"I didn't tell you, but um.. You look pretty this morning.."
Mercedes gave him a polite smile.
"Thanks you.."
They stared at each other for a minute before Jerome pulled her into a hug. He kissed the top of her head.
"I'll call you later so they can tell you about their day and say good night."
Jerome pulled away and Mercedes nodded. She stood in the hallway and watched them leave. The kids turned around right before they got to the elevator and waved.
"Bye my little babies! Have fun and behave!"
