The small girl was walking with her brother once again. It was a Friday evening. About 4:30 pm. Ethan wanted to get her out of the house. He had taken another hit for her in their current foster home, and she was convinced that he should be resting, but Ethan decided it was time to leave again. To Ethan, it was his job to be her hero. It had been another year at this point, and Ethan was getting tired. Tired of the horrible foster homes. You'd think they'd be with someone decent at this point, but no. The system was pretty much shit. Ethan was glad for the pleasant, warm, summer weather. So warm in fact, that the pair was in shorts and T-shirts. Their bruises were visible , but they didn't really care much. "Ethan, stop doing that." The little seven year old pleads. "No way. You can't stop me." "But I don't want you to get hurt." She protests. Ethan stops, crouching in front of her. "(Y/n), I promise it'll always be okay." She simply nods, knowing he can't really make that promise, but doesn't want to argue anymore. Ethan notices this change in mood, and smiles. "Hey, don't frown. We need that frown to be upside down!" He says in a funny voice, moving the corners of her mouth into a smile.

The girl giggles with delight, making Ethan's smile bigger. Just then, a fluffy golden thing rams into Ethan, knocking him over with a yelp. (Y/n) giggles. "Ethan, it's a puppy!" The girl exclaimed. The boy, sat himself up on the side walk to see his sister petting the friendly dog with glee. "Did you let it sniff you?" Ethan asks. She nods. "Duh, Ethan!" She teases. Ethan put his hand out letting the dog sniff him, before petting it as well. "Chica! Come back!" A woman with brown hair comes running up. "I'm so sorry, Chics got off her leash." She says once she's caught up to the fluffy dog. "It's alright. She's so cute!" (Y/n) says happily. Ethan doesn't say anything. (Y/n) could get past the horrors of their past enough to talk to adults that were being polite, but Ethan has a big distrust for everyone. "She is. I'm Amy." A man comes running up behind her. "Did you find her-oh...hello!" The man says. (Y/n) waves. "Hi! I'm (Y/n), this is my brother Ethan!" She introduces. The man crouches down, petting Chica. "Well, I'm Mark. That's my girlfriend Amy. This is Chica."

Ethan looks on, slightly tensed at how close Mark is to his sister. Amy crouches next to Mark. "Where are your parents?" She asks, a smile in her face and curiosity in her eyes. Both Ethan and (Y/n) visibly tense, making Amy tilt her head in confusion. "I-Uh-well-" "Don't worry about it." Ethan finally says, his words a bit harsh. (Y/n) looks down, dejected. Mark and Amy look at Ethan. "Did you two...run away?" Mark asks. "Something like that." (Y/n) answers. Ethan inwardly groans. He didn't want these two strangers to ask questions. "What do you mean, honey?" Amy asks in a soothing tone. "I said don't worry about it!" Ethan snaps. (Y/n) doesn't react to his hard. She was used to this when people were around, and she knew he wasn't angry with her. Mark looked Ethan in the eye. "Kid, we just want to help. I promise, that's all. We don't want to hurt you or you sister." Mark says calmly. Ethan was skeptical. No one has ever wanted to help, and Ethan wasn't convinced they'd be the first.

(Y/n) on the other hand was. "Mommy and Daddy went away a long time ago. We go to bad people sometimes now, but Ethan protects me, and we go away from there." She explained as best she could. Ethan gave her a look to which she gave a defiant look bad. Mark and Amy looked at the pair in silent horror. The bruises made sense now, the hard exterior from Ethan. There were a lot more bruises on him. Whether from being picked on more, or protecting (Y/n), they didn't know, but they couldn't leave them like this. The couple looked at each other in silent agreement. "W-Would you like to stay with us?" Amy asked, looking at Ethan as if expecting him to take his sister and run. (Y/n)'s face lit up in glee. Ethan looked at her, her face filled with hope. He couldn't turn them down in the chance of making her sad. Besides, he thought, there wasn't a reason to distrust them yet. Ethan silently nods. (Y/n) cheers, hugging him. He smiles, hugging her back. The sight makes the couples heart melt.
