I really hope it's not awful 😅

(Y/n) P.O.V.

Today's world is...interesting to say the least. Kitsunes are all over the place, both living wildly in rural areas, or as domesticated pets. They've become such a normal occurrence that dogs seem stranger. I never understood the hype. To me, Kitsunes were people too, despite their power and tails. It's just weird. However, that is about to change. I'm walking down an unfamiliar street, as I missed my bus and have to walk, when I pass a pet store. It's the kind that has a big glass front so you can see the animals inside. There is a Kitsune in the front display, but the sight is heartbreaking. Giving a passing glance, it'd be easy to notice his dark hair, sculpted face, and pretty eyes first. But if you look closer you'd see how frazzled his hair is, how sunken his face looks, how dull his eyes shine. He is skinny, clearly unhealthily, and his hands are chained down. My guess is because he have nine tails. He could've been one of the most powerful men out there, but they've locked him up here and broken his spirit. I can't let this slip by. Going against all my beliefs, I walk inside and find a clerk.

"Ma'am? How much for the Kitsune in the window?" I question with a stormy face. The lady's cheerful expression turns to distaste. "Are you sure about that? We have plenty of other nice animal." She tries to dissuade me, but I won't budge. I sharply reply, "I'm sure." The lady shakes her head. "That might be a bad idea, sir. It could be very dangerous. I'm not sure why the manager keeps it around. Maybe business." I look over at the broken down Kitsune. "Don't care. How much?" With a sigh, the lady takes my money, and we walk over the Kitsune with keys. His face holds mostly fear, but also curiosity. I'll have to get him to trust me. "We also have plenty of nice colla-" I cut the lady off. "No need." I insist. I turn to the Kitsune, holding out a hand for him to take. He takes a moment, looking at his bruised but free wrists, me, and the door. Is he thinking about running? I suppose I'd let him if he wanted to. "It'll be okay. I just want to help. No collars or anything. You can hold my hand." He smiles so very softly, but it makes my heart leap anyways.

He takes my hand, and I lead him out of the shop. "I'm (Y/n). I am not your owner. I'm your friend, okay? Can you speak?" He nods, but doesn't say anything. He seems happy to be outside though, as I see his tails swishing around, and looks like an excited child. It's adorable. "Do you have a name?" He only nods again. "Can I know your name?" I laugh. He stiffens, looking around warily as if someone might hear him. "No one is going to hurt you for talking. I promise." I hold up our conjoined hands as if making a point. "You can trust me."

"Nate."

"Nate, can you show me that trick again?" I ask excitedly. Over the past few months of Nate being here, I've been nursing him back to health. He isn't quite at full strength yet, but he's gotten powerful enough to start using magic again. And it's beautiful. "You're so weird." He teases from his spot of the couch. "You're way to obsessed with a little fire, you pyro." I stick my tongue out at him. "How is that gonna convince me?" I shrug. "Pretty please?" Nate sits up smiling. "Fine." He holds his hand out, palm side up, and emits a decent sized fire. He brings his other hand to the ends of the flame, and pulls his upward, dragging the fire along with it like it's a slinky. I love seeing him use magic. I love it because he smiles so wide. I love it because he finally gets to have control over something. And that makes him confident. Makes him proud.

But it also makes him strong. It makes him ready to leave me.

I originally planned to let Nate be free when was healthy again, but now I've grown attached. I can't imagine my life without him. He is my best friend, my partner in crime, my world. I didn't have much before I met him. It's hard to let that all go. I guess my face had changes expressions because Nate stops, looking at me with concern in his bright chestnut eyes. "Are you alright?" I debate lying, but decide the truth might be best. If we start fighting, maybe it'll hurt less. "I'm not prepared for you to leave." I mumble. Nate seems confused. "I have to leave?" His face holds hurt. There's a tug at my heartstrings. "I mean...don't you wanna be free?" He shrugs. (I don't wanna be freeeee).

"I like being here. With you, (Y/n)." I bite my lip. "I like you being here too, Nate. I don't want you to go...but isn't it better for you? To go to your home?" I'm holding back tears. This could be goodbye. "Home is where the heart is. And my heart is with you. Please don't make me go." He begs. "Do you mean that, Nate?" I ask, my heart hopeful. He nods vigorously, tears springing to his own eyes. "I need you. Please don't make me leave." I quickly wrap him in a giant hug. "I will never make you leave. I will never let go...because my heart is with you." I repeat. We hold our hand together, our foreheads pressed to each other. I look at hips lip, mere inches from mine. "Can I kiss you Nate?" He seems a bit startled by the question, but nods. I lean toward him slowly. The moment seems right for a slow kiss as much as I want to smash our lips together. In our tender moment, my hands find their way to his hair, his landing on my chest. I never really saw myself kissing a guy, let alone a Kitsune guy, but it feels right. This is just right.
