You walked quickly through the streets, weaving through the people around you and trying your best to not drop your groceries. You could hear Tsuyu behind you, trying to keep up with your pace. She was trying to make casual conversation, but you couldn't bring yourself to look up from the ground enough to see her.
"So (Y/N), do you like it uptown? It's a lot quieter than downtown, kero. You should be able to build in peace up here!" She stumbled slightly over a pedestrian who shot her a weird look as she continued on.
You stayed silent, letting her talk. The nervousness in her voice didn't go unnoticed, but you didn't have the energy to reassure her. You'd only gone out to get food because there was almost none left in the house, after all. You planned on going back to bed as soon as you were home.
About a block from your home, Tsuyu finally slowed her talking. You took a deep breath, preparing yourself.
"You know I didn't mean for any of this to happen, right? It wasn't meant to be like this at all, but I can't do anything to change it. If I could trade my life for hers, I would in a heartbeat, kero."
"Tsuyu, please." Your voice was threatening to crack. "Just leave it, please."
"You're not eating, you hardly leave our room, I can't just leave it. (Y/N), really, I'm sorry. But she wouldn't want this for you. Xavier doesn't want this for you." She took a deep breath, clearly trying to keep herself from crying. "He needs you now. We both do. Please (Y/N), talk to us."
"Tsuyu, she's gone. Our little girl is gone and there's nothing anybody can do to change that. I just-" You took a shaky breath, finally reaching your front door. "I need a bit. Give me another week or two."
Tsuyu sighed, letting you walk into the quiet house. Xavier raced out of his room, crashing into your leg and holding on tightly.
"Xavier, hon, I need to put groceries away."
"Only if you promise we can watch a movie when you're done." You hesitated. All you wanted was to finish up and go lay down before you lost all strength.
"Fine. But it has to be Return to Neverland, okay?" Xavier smiled, running into the living room without another word. You let out the breath you'd been holding, quick to finish putting things away.
A week later and things had almost returned to normal. An air of caution lays heavily over your house, but you and Tsuyu were back at work and Xavier was back to school.
He hadn't even gotten out of the car that morning before your phone rang, and he let his curiosity keep him.
You stared in horror as the call continued, growing closer and closer to tears the entire time. Xavier looked confused and afraid, lip trembling as he came close to missing the bell.
You hung up the phone after a simple "we'll be right there," surprising your son.
"Put your seatbelt back on, you're missing school." He nodded, too afraid to even ask what was happening.
A short drive later and you'd arrived at a hospital in the third floor waiting room. You'd sat Xavier in your lap, hugging him tightly. He only had a vague idea of what was happening, but he knew enough to be horrified.
She'd made it through surgery, but she was hardly hanging on. Her thread would snap any second if even a small error presented itself.
You cried at her bedside as your wife and best friend flatlined. Xavier screamed, too short to reach the bed and shake her awake like he wanted to. The small second grader collapsed on the ground, shaking with tears as you shared his position. Nurses rushed into the room, but it wasn't like they could do anything. She was gone.
The funeral was held within a week, the second one that month. She was buried next to Alex, and you refused to let Xavier go throughout the entire thing. He didn't complain, burying his face into your shoulder when he couldn't stand to look anymore.
The house grew silent again, but this time Xavier shared a bed with you. Neither of you could go the night without nightmares, so it was almost a requirement. A family of four shrunk to two in the span of a month and nobody was prepared for it.
Tsuyu's friends came over every few days, checking up and seeing how you were doing. Bakugou was over the most, trying to cheer both of you up. He had been Alex's godfather, and she'd gotten a good chunk of her personality from him. She was like a mini Bakugou, and seeing him made you and Xavier feel a little bit better. Just his aura was enough to calm you slightly.
Tsuyu was all over the news, being the number six hero. Kirishima had taken her place, but he didn't seem happy with it. If anything, he seemed entirely unaccepting of it. He refused to admit that his position changed, something Bakugou had told you about in one of his visits. You couldn't help but cry.
The villain who'd killed your family was caught, but the hollow chunks he'd stolen from your heart stayed destroyed. He looked smug when the news covered his capture, and you could see him speaking to Todoroki as the boy shoved him into the back of a cruiser. With all your years of lip reading, you could tell easily what he'd said.
"So, how're the Asui's doing?"
"How long has she been out, exactly?"
"Nearly two hours, kero. I'll probably carry her back if she's not awake by the time school's out." Uraraka nodded, having visited you and Tsuyu on her break.
"Any nightmares?"
"She's making noises, but they don't sound like the things she'd do during a normal nightmare. Something's definitely happening though, she's restless and about to cry."
Uraraka only nodded, looking at you asleep on one of Recovery Girl's beds.
