"Nari!" Rex yelled, his frustration bubbling to the surface. "Nari gar di'kutla ruus!"
Ahsoka sighed and set down the bowl of nuna bones she had been chewing on. Rex's tone and her own broken mando'a gave her an adequate translation. "Rex, yelling at the stone's not going to make it move." She placed a gentle hand on his arm. He sighed and at back on his heels. They had been working for about a week now, and considering the circumstances, Rex had made brilliant progress.
It turns out that he needed minimal teaching in learning to feel the force, just a bit of fine tuning on his rough technique. Just as Ahsoka had been skilled in feeling the force around other people, and her master had amazing reflexes before he was taken to the temple, they found out that Rex's untrained ability was feeling danger. Now that she thought about it, it made sense. They had also gone through the basic Shii-Cho lightsaber forms, but that was an area that would take a lot of time to master.
"Try again. Don't try to lift the stone in your own power, lift it with the force in it and around it." Ahsoka picked up her bowl and snapped a bone in half, sucking the marrow out. Rex blew out a short breath of air and closed his eyes. Since she had stared teaching him, it was like opening his eyes for the first time. He could feel Ahsoka, and he could feel the room in the temple. He tried to narrow himself down, and focus on the stone in front of him. It wasn't very big, about the size of a ration bar.
He could feel the force around it, and even in it. It was in the stone to be sure, but not like he felt it in other living things. Focusing on the force, he tried to bend the current around the stone, to pick it up like he had seen Ahsoka do countless times since they had started this step of training. He heard a clatter, and opened one eye cautiously. The stone was trembling, and it rolled over once. It was something, but not good enough. He realised he was sweating and struggling to even keep the stone rattling against the floor. He let it go with a slight gasp.
Ahsoka closed her eyes. "You almost had it, but you tried to draw on your own strength at the end." She admonished, but her tone was soft. Rex opened both of his eyes and glared at her and the rock.
"Look, I'm trying ok!" He growled, gritting his teeth. He wasn't mad at Ahsoka but at the rock and at his own failure.
"I know you ar-"
"I'm doing my best, I swear!" He rose to his feet, stretching out the cramps in his legs from kneeling so long. Ahsoka stood too, still carrying her bowl.
"Rex-"
"I'm sorry I can't just... get it right! Ok?"
Ahsoka felt an ominous ripple in the force. "Rex, you need to calm-"
"This is all new to me! I have absolutely no clue what I am doing! I'm sorry I-"
"REX!" This time Ahsoka broke in, putting a hand on his arm as he paced and yelled. She was glad the temple rooms were soundproof.
"WHAT?!" He spun around to face her, his frustration hitting it's boiling point. The bowl in Ahsoka's hand exploded, sending shards of pottery and bone flying everywhere. A particularly sharp piece grazed her cheek, drawing a thin line of blood under her eye. Both of them froze, staring at the mess. Rex's anger and frustration melted away to guilt and fear.
"Ahsoka I..." He reached up like he was going to wipe the blood from her cheek. His hand paused an inch away from her skin. He staggered back, leaning against the wall and raking a hand through his hair. It had grown out in the time at Kavado and over the last week, his fingers leaving furrows in the close cropped blond fuzz. This snapped Ahsoka out of her trance, and she raised two fingers to the cut. It wasn't deep at all, barely breaking the skin.
