“Sumo.....Since ancient times warriors clad in mawashi belts have waged battles within the ring. It is one of the few combat sports without weight classes. Thus student wrestlers who are heavier and larger in statue have a distinct advantage over the rest of their competition. Among them there are those with the potential to achieve the rank of Yokozuna. These athletes received a name of a sword from Japan’s National Treasure as their moniker’.
"Wow daddy look. They're so big. They look bigger then you" the little 5 year old girl exclaimed excitingly to her dad with her eyes glued firmly on the television screen. "I see them sweetie. They're sumo wrestlers, so they will be bigger then a rugby player like me", says the smiling dad, sitting on the chair next to his daughter.
"Sumo?" The girl looked at her dad quizzically.
"Sumo is a popular sport in countries far away from here. The wrestlers compete by pushing each out of the ring or to the ground during a bout. If anything but their feet touch the ground, then they're out. Depending how well they do, the wrestlers can obtain a title. One of those titles is Yokozuna".
"Yo-ko-" The dad starts laughing at seeing his daughter's pouting face for trying and not succeeding to pronounce a difficult word. "Close. Yokozuna. It means grand champion in Japan. To put it simply they are the best".
"Woooooow".
The stars that lit up in his daughter's eyes meant the world to him, so much so you could see an arrow piercing the dad's heart and his inner voice yelling 'CUTE'.
"How do you know so much about it dad?" The dad, bought back down to earth from the question, answered "I trained over in Japan a couple of times and at one point we had to train along side some sumo wrestlers. The wrestlers taught me a lot and I made some friends through the training and watching a tournament once. I'm still friends with them". The little girl looked at her dad as if he just bought her the stars "That's so cool dad. You know sumo wrestlers. I wish I could meet them because I want to be rugby player like you, which means I need to be stronger and to do that, I will learn from them too".
"Hahahaha. I hoped you would say something like that" the dad laughed whilst holding his stomach, ‘She’s is definitely my daughter’ he thought, "I'm sure one day, you will meet them and learn from them just like I did".
The little girl was smiling so wide that it was blinding.
She turned back to the television in time to watch two wrestlers start a bout. One considerably smaller than the other. "Dad do you know those wrestlers?" The girl asked. The dad looked at the television and smiled, "Yeah I do. Those two are always competing against each other and neither back down. I always enjoy watching their bouts". The girl watched the match with excitement "Really? What are their names?"
He replied "The bigger one is Yamatokuni and the smaller one is Akio Shibakiyama".
