"Matalino ka nga, bata."
All my life, I've been running away from compliments, especially when I've learned most of them are double-edged knives. At some point, they may seem "harmless", pero kapag naunawaan mo na ang konteksto, mapapa-isip ka na lang kung may sinseridad ba talaga ang mga papuri nila sa'yo.
Matalino.
Paano mo nga ba masasabing "matalino" ang isang tao?
I stared at Gabrio with a grave expression. Unless he tells us everything he knows, I'm afraid I can no longer trust him the way I used to.
"Sino ka ba talaga?"
I didn't hesitate to ask that question. Fair enough, he didn't hesitate to answer me.
"I never lied about my name, you know. In fact, dati akong scientific adviser ng mayor."
Doon na ako natigilan. 'Dating scientific adviser? What in the name of asteroids?' With those dirty clothes and faded jeans, hindi mo iisiping dati siyang naninilbihan bilang isa sa pinaka-maimpluwensiyang nilalang sa New Eastwood city hall. The rank of a scientific adviser gives you enough privileges and power to earn the respect of other officials.
Good question. Why would the mayor banish one of the "greatest minds" in New Eastwood?
"I should be asking you the same thing."
That's when I noticed he was staring at something around Nesrin's neck. Maging si Galileo, para bang hindi mapakali. He's a smart duck, he can clearly sense the heaviness in the atmosphere right now.
Nesrin didn't look too happy with this, either.
"Hindi kita maintindihan. Anong kinalaman nito sa'kin?" Her soil-colored eyes narrowed.
Nesrin held the diamond pendant between her trembling fingers.
"Y-You're crazy...
In any normal circumstances, I doubt your ancestors would pass it down to the next generation as easy as that."
Rumehistro ang pagkabigla sa ekspresyon ni Nesrin. Well, Gabrio does have a point.
"Kanino 'yan galing?" I voiced out the question, loud enough to catch their attention.
His words were like the rays of the sun after a long cold winter; giving light and warmth to the confusion that darkened our judgement. "I bet you already know that your grandfather, Sir Nicholas, was one of the scientists who helped build those Oxygenators. Noong una, wala siyang pakialam sa 'consequences' na kaakibat nito, pero noong maluklok siya bilang scientific adviser at malaman niya ang Asteroid Drift sa taong 2134, he devised a plan to free everyone from these restraints."
Carpe Corvus.
Seize the crow.
Paglaya. Now that I think about it, it seems like a creepy foreshadowing of what happened and is bound to happen again.
"Sir Nicholas' guilt pushed him to create a saving grace for the residents of that damned place. With the help of his resources, gumawa si Sir Nicholas ng coding scheme. It's a set of computerized instructions in the form of binary codes.
Indeed, it all lines up.
Suddenly, realization hit me harder than a meteor crashing down on Earth (bad analogy, I know).
Diyamante.
Damn. Why didn't I think of this sooner?
"Dmitri...?"
Napabuntong-hininga na lang ako. "I guess I'm not as smart as I thought I am."
"Huh? Bakit naman?"
"That arranged marriage thing wasn't random, Nesrin. Now, I realized it wasn't a coincidence. In reality, your groom was suppose to steal that necklace from you if it weren't for our interference. Without that diamond, they won't be able to complete their plans for New Eastwood."
Her eyes widened in shock as she stared at the diamond pendant.
Close, but not quite.
A diamond can actually be used to store large amounts of data. Believe it or not, a diamond as small as a grain of rice can hold 100 times more data than a DVD.
Plus, it's less suspicious that way. It's a complex technology that only a few people heard of, but it's efficient, nonetheless.
So, basically, Nesrin's diamond necklace is both a jewelry and a "flash drive".
Awesome, right?
"Before I was banished, Sir Nicholas entrusted that diamond to me. Dahil wala akong kakayahang pangalagaan ang diyamanteng 'yan, I randomly asked Mrs. Cavanaugh to keep it." Malungkot na ngumiti si Gabrio. Naroon ang pagod sa kanyang mga mata. Mukhang personal nga silang makakilala ni lolo. Maybe it's because they were both scientific advisers at one point?
It's for the greater good. Nesrin suggested.
"You can live freely here on Earth."
I can see the mixed emotions behind that tired smile. Something that goes deeper than what we already know.
