David Botha never thought he would find himself in this position ever again, at least not with the one he wanted to be with.
Normally, they would both be sleeping at either end of their bed, far away from each other with their backs facing the other person.
They never spoke, and every time they tried, it always ended in an argument.
They both had commitments outside their marriage, or better yet, they were more commited to their jobs than they were to their marriage; and the only time they ever confronted the issue was out of jealousy or rage, and it led them nowhere.
At some point David even suspected that Lola was cheating on him, often she refused to sleep with him and would not even let him touch her, and the few times they slept together, it was just sex, there was no love.
He was convinced that she was sleeping with someone else, but Logan reassured him that the only thing on her mind was work, and nothing or no-one else. That was the only reassurance since Logan and Lola were childhood friends, and she told him everything, not to mention that Logan was a mutual friend between the two of them.
He did not want to lose her, but after their last argument, he was sure they were done.
They had arguments all the time, but that one scared him the most, they had not spoken since then. However, he was surprised this morning after he came back from the bathroom and laid down when she rolled to his side of the bed and snuggled in his arms.
"Will we be okay?" She had asked.
He could not help but wrap his arms around her, it was like a dream come true; being able to hold her, smell her, and play with her hair. He missed it, he missed her.
He embraced her for a while before responding, "I'm sorry. I'm sorry about everything, I know I haven't been the best husband to you, nor have I been a good father to our kids."
She moved her head, but David could not tell whether it was an attempt to nod or shake. "No, I'm sorry too. I'm sorry for using my heart condition as an excuse to run away from my problems and responsibilities," she said softly, her breath tickling his skin. "Dave, when we got married, we made a promise that we would always be here for each other, in good and in bad times, for better for worse, in health and in sickness. And you've stuck to your end of the deal while I found every reason to run away. I pushed you away, and honestly, I haven't been a good parent to our kids either. Baby, if it wasn't for your mother, our kids would be suffering." David felt his heart warm at the title, she had not called him that in a long, she always referred to him by his full name.
His smile vanished when a certain someone popped in his mind. "I only want what's best for her."
Lola sighed, they always had this conversation, and she did not like it. "Shannon is still young, she still has time to get better. You have to let her make her own mistakes, eventually, she will learn and grow. But she can't do that with you sitting on her neck all the time."
"That woman." Lola tensed under his touch, they had never touched that subject before. "She threatened to harm Shannon, I had to do something," he said heavily. He had not been able to forgive himself for what happened to Amber, he was the one who dragged her into this mess to begin with, and he used her.
He placed both his sister and cousin's lives in danger.
Amber's career was officially ruined, and his sister was turning more and more into a druggie each day.
"You couldn't have known. MJ is dangerous, she's a bloody parasite," his wife muttered begrudgingly. "It feels like a lot of things just went south from the day she arrived."
"I just hope Logan realises the type of person she is, it's like she has some kind of hold on him, and all she's ever done is cause havoc in his life."
His mind drifted to the job he got thirteen years ago when he had to hunt her down.
That was probably the worst case of his career, he located her, but had nothing to show for it when she disappeared before they could find her.
To this day, he was convinced that she was pregnant at the time he traced her, but strangely, there was no record of that, and she had no kids.
If anything, there was nothing about her at all, just word on the streets. It was as if she was some sort of a legend, a mystery – a myth.
Everyone has a past, everyone had secrets and weaknesses, and it was only a matter of time before he discovered hers.
He was able to convince everyone that he was retired, but he just had to pull off this job before buying a vacation home somewhere in the wild.
Without realising it, his hands started roaming around his wife's body, and she instantly went brittle, her breath caught in her throat, but she relaxed again after a few seconds.
When she did not protest, he continued his trip, slowly acquainting himself with her body once again.
He had forgotten how soft her skin felt and just how every bit of her body seemed to fit perfectly into his hands as if she was made for him.
"I miss you," he said hoarsely as he flipped her so that she was underneath him.
She looked hesitant. "Your mom, your aunt... They are just around the corner."
"When has that ever stopped you?"
"David, you don't understand."
"The only thing I understand right now is that I want you." He grinded against her, earning a low moan from her.
She stared at him with lustful eyes. "I want you too, but... I'm scared. I feel... The way I feel right now, I don't want things to change afterwards."
He understood where she was coming from, they had been in this position too many times before, but the next day it was as if they slept in separate bedrooms; they acted like total strangers around each other.
Lola would be in a rush to get to work, while David was also quick to run away and disappear for months.
It bothered him that he could not be with his wife the way he wanted to be, it was as if the honeymoon phase ended directly after their actual honeymoon.
He could never understand what went wrong, if could describe his marriage in one word, it would be 'complicated.' It was complicated, but they remained together all these years, and had three beautiful daughters to prove it.
It was complicated, but David wanted it to work. Now more than ever, especially since he was retired, he needed to have a happy family.
He loved Lola, and could not imagine a life without her. They had a lot of issues to tackle, but nothing would work out if they did not try, they had to start somewhere.
"Do you trust me?" He asked, locking his eyes on her while pulling down her underwear.
She sucked in a deep breath as his fingers came into contact with her skin, and she nodded her head eagerly. "Yes."
"Then let me take care of you, let me love you."
