Antonina Dos Santos's assassination attempt had not only jeopardised Logan's businesses, but it also left him with families wanting justice in his name.
It was one thing having to explain to Zoe Botha why anyone would want to kill Mrs Dos Santos, an old woman in her mid sixties, who owned a small café. Logan could easily pin it on competition to want to get rid of them, but no one in the city was at his level, he could barely refer to them as competition. They were more like ants on the earth, he could not crush them like cockroaches, they had to coexist, and Logan had no problem with that, because he made a lot of money even with their small restaurants flooding the city.
Another thing was that he made all those restaurants a possibility, without him, they would not exist; so that one was out of the equation.
The entire shootout was captured on camera for everyone to see, and a lot of people had died, it was not something that could be easily buried under the carpet.
At this point, there was nothing Logan could do for the families besides helping them financially and by attending the mass funeral. There was no use investing money to solve this case, especially because he already had an idea who was behind the shooting.
The place was already being fixed up and it would be running in a few weeks. Logan knew it would most likely cause a public outrage, especially with news of Antonina and a few of her staff being the only survivors.
He tried not to worry too much about that right now, especially on an early Tuesday morning, his main priority at the moment was protecting the old lady.
He started his morning by stopping at Five Stars to get some breakfast and coffee for himself and Antonina before going to visit her at the hospital.
He placed his order and waited at the bar while playing on his phone to keep himself distracted. This place brought back quite some memories, and he hated how his heart drummed at the thought.
He was still waiting for his order when he felt a presence beside him, and he looked up from his phone, to be greeted by someone he had not seen in a while. Well, he saw her face on the cover of Drum Magazine, but the last time he had seen her in person was on the night of the launch.
"Lorraine De Kock," he sung, a smirk on his face. "Fancy meeting you here, it's been a while." He eyes trailed over her body before landing on her face.
She had a passive look and was staring forward as if he was not there, and she only smiled when the cashier finally attended to her. "Order for Lorraine De Kock," she said swiftly. The waiter handed her a brown takeaway paper bag. "Thank you." She threw Logan one nasty look and then walked away, seemingly swaying her hips a little too much.
Logan chuckled lowly and shook his head. "The things we do for sex," he muttered.
"Morning drama?" He turned around to meet his business partner, Sne.
"Ah, the jerk's wife."
Sne rolled her eyes at him. "Don't worry, soon enough there won't be anything that ties me to him," Sne said and invited him to a table away from the bar.
"I hope your divorce won't affect my business, the last thing I need is to have Kyle as a business partner."
"You don't have to worry about that."
Logan sat down and took in everything around him, the restaurant was packed, and it was not even noon yet. "Business is booming."
"Well, our customers know that we value their safety," she said pointedly.
Logan raised his eyebrows in surprise. "Wow, okay."
"No offence."
"None taken," he lied bluntly. Maybe what happened at La Café affected him more than he was willing to admit, but he was suddenly feeling unwell. It felt as if there was a huge rock sitting in his chest. He looked over his shoulder and frowned. "What's taking them so long? I just ordered two coffees and some croissants."
"You know what they say, Parker, good food takes time to prepare," Sne said and stood up. "But since you are in such a hurry, I'll go and see what's the holdup."
Logan rolled his eyes as she walked away. What was it with these women and swaying their hips?
He took out his phone and turned the screen on, his fingers hovering on the screen as he contemplated on whether to call his best friend or not.
He hated being torn in half, one part wanted to reconcile with Jorge, but the other wanted to punish him severely.
But then again, it would not hurt checking up on him. He was about to dial his number when Sne returned with his order.
"I'm sorry we took so long, today is lot busier than usual. But, I personally added an extra croissant for the inconvenience," she said, handing him his coffees and a brown bag.
He grinned at her and took his takeaway. "Am I supposed to thank you for doing your job?"
Sne rolled her eyes and crossed her arms. "I didn't take you to have a sweet tooth."
Logan shrugged. "I don't, but Antonina does. It comes with the age." He lifted the cup holders and nodded in approval. "I see you even took the liberty to label my coffee, how nice."
"Have a great day, Parker."
"You too, partner." He left the restaurant and drove to the hospital to visit Antonina, making a mental note to call Jorge later.
