Kyle could not stand hospitals, no matter what. They brought back bad memories he could never seem to bury.
He hated being useless, having his life in the hands of others, which was exactly why he tried avoiding trouble at all costs.
He lived a reckless life before, and his choices landed him in hospital, prison, and even rehab. Having rich parents really saved him, and thanks to his father, he was able to walk on the right path again.
Kyle did not want to ever find himself doing illegal things again, and he had stuck on that path for years and he would not start now. He did not have dangerous enemies who would want him dead, not even Logan Parker.
However, it came as a shock when the former came to his apartment earlier. Logan had never visited him in years now, not even to remind Kyle of his existence, most of their conversations were over the phone, and only when Logan needed something.
Kyle was still shocked, Logan's visit only confirmed his suspicions. After Zoe's endless questions about his relationship with Logan Parker, followed by his wife's hysterical accusations, Kyle was sure that Logan had something to do with his poisoning. Except, it was not intentional, Kyle brought it upon himself when he took Logan's coffee at the hospital.
The poison was not meant for him, it was meant for Logan Parker, and if he had not taken that coffee, Logan would have probably been history.
There was one thing that bugged him about this whole thing, the fact that Zoe knew nothing about the empty coffee cup, because his wife got rid of it.
What worried him even more was that it seemed that Sne did not want to involve the police, and she got rid of the only evidence that would have led them to the culprit.
Kyle was not sure why, until Logan confirmed that he bought the coffee from his restaurant, where his wife owned fifty percent. It bothered him, because Sne was not a murderer, she was incapable of hurting anyone, let alone kill them; especially not Logan Parker.
There was no bad blood between them, there never was even though Logan and Kyle could never stay under the same roof for more than a second, Sne did not get involved in their rivalry.
However, there was something else going on here; Logan was right, someone was playing games, and Sne was just a puppet that could be disposed at any time.
As if that was not enough, the media was hounding him over the poisoning, they were trying to get him to spill all the beans.
He did not know which story to sell, on one hand his parents were accusing his wife of trying to kill him, his wife was accusing Logan, and Logan was accusing his wife; and the worst part, they were all wrong. But only one of them held the answers to every single question he had.
Someone wanted to kill Logan, but why?
Kyle stayed in his dining room all day, watching TV while waiting for his wife to come.
Sne rocked up later in the evening, looking like a bang as usual. She looked much better than the last time he saw her at the hospital before discharging himself, she dressed like the business woman she was.
"I heard you were looking for me," she said, standing in front of the TV with her arms crossed.
He watched her, wondering how she could walk around as if she did not just try to kill him. At this point, everything pointed to her, he only needed to confirm the truth and find out why. Why did this have to happen? Why her of all people?
What would have happened if he had gone straight to his place after leaving?
He was a second away from dying, and then she would have gotten all his assets and money.
"You know, after what happened the last time, I never thought I'd end up in the hospital again. The whole scenario, laying on that table and having the doctors pump my body with chemicals to get rid of other chemicals... It was very scary for me," he recalled, for a second feeling like the poison was burning through his body all over again.
She lost her composure, her entire wall cracking as pity and regret engulfed her face. "I know." She threw her purse on the couch and sat next to him.
"It felt like I had drugs in my stomach all over again, like there was venom coursing through my veins." He kept his feet on the table, his one hand slung over the couch, while he changed the TV channels, looking for nothing in particular. He was trying to act as though it did not bother him, but his mind kept flashes of blinding light, voices, doctors, surgical masks, green... He could not believe that the last twenty-four hours actually happened. It was like reliving his worst nightmare over and over again, with no way out.
"Oh gosh, I'm so sorry, Kyle. I'm really sorry!" She exclaimed horrendously, pulling at her dreadlocks.
Kyle finally switched off the TV and threw the remote on the coffee table, causing Sne to jump in fright. "For what exactly?" He snapped.
She frowned and shrugged. "I'm sorry you had to go through all that again."
"Really?" Her nonchalance was what really pissed him off, how she was acting innocent and clueless about what she had done. She was no fool and had a perfectly good memory from her younger days.
"What's that supposed to mean?" She asked.
"Tell me something, Sne." He took her hand and placed a soft kiss on it. "If I were to show up at your restaurant with my mother, would you go on and about, taking care of our orders yourself?"
She swallowed, staring at him with teary eyes. "You spoke to Logan," she stated and pulled her hand out of his hold.
Kyle dropped his feet off the table and turned his full body towards her. "I didn't say anything about Logan. But since you mentioned him, hey! Logan was here earlier," he raised his voice, causing her to flinch. "My mother has made ridiculous accusations against you before, but I always stood by you, because I knew none of those things were true. But do you realise that for the first time ever, she was right about you?"
She shook her head, tears galloping out of her eyes. "Kyle-" She tried to reach for his hand.
"You tried to kill me!" He yelled, his chest burning up in pain and anger.
"It was a mistake."
"A mistake? Would it have been still a mistake if Logan had consumed that coffee?"
"I'm sorry!"
"For what? For goodness sake, you tried to kill someone! You were ready to end someone's life, does that sound normal to you?"
"You already know I couldn't live with myself if I had the opportunity to protect my family and ignored it for the sake of virtue, Kyle," she yelled, taking him by surprise. "I had no choice, it was either him or my family."
Kyle could not believe what he was hearing. He did not know what was worse, finding out that his wife was behind his poisoning, or that Logan was right. There was a mastermind behind this, and they were not playing games.
"A woman came to see me in my office later that day after our meeting. It was late and I was getting ready to close the restaurant." Fresh tears rolled down her face, and there was no ounce of emotion in her eyes. "I was only following orders."
Orders that nearly caused me my life! He thought, pinching the bridge of his nose.
And now she had invited Logan back into his life. He did not know whether to feel bad for her or mad, but one thing for sure, if there was ever a chance that they could find a way to keep their families together and try to work on their relationship, this had just killed it.
