“Morning, Anita!” Jorge greeted Anita who seemed to be in a daze. He walked behind the couch on which she was seated and peeked at her laptop screen. “Carlyle?” He asked in her ear, causing her to jump.
“Jorge!” She scolded and closed her laptop.
“Aha! Here I was, thinking Blue was Logan and MJ’s colour, but I guess it is everyone’s colour these days.” He said as he jumped over and plopped down on the couch.
“Every day is Monday for MJ.” Anita rolled her eyes. “Do you know anyone by the name of Carlyle?” She asked, fiddling with her fingers.
“No. Why?” He frowned.
“Some guy came while I was at the beach two nights ago; he said his name was Carlyle.” She said quietly.
“How did he look?” He asked.
“I don’t know.” She shrugged. “He was wearing a hoodie, and it was dark; I couldn’t make out his face.” She sighed.
“You said he was at the beach?” Jorge asked again.
“Yes, he just came out of nowhere.” She said. “I thought he was one of your men, you know; your search team.” She looked at Jorge who had a faraway look.
“I got to go; Thuso says Logan is back.” He got up and stretched his arms. Clearly, he was no longer listening to her. “God! He had better pay me for all of the trouble I had to go through to find him.” He said as he walked towards the stairs.
Anita sighed and opened up her laptop, and then continued with her hopeless search.
Jorge stepped out of the house, got into his car, and reversed out of the garage; only to step on the brakes as he spotted a man standing behind his car.
The man was tall and slim, and he was dressed in an oversized, yellow raincoat with a huge hoodie that hid his face from view. He walked towards the passenger side, and Jorge's pulse beat faster as the man stepped into the car and closed the door.
They sat in heavy silence, and Jorge tightened his grip on the steering wheel, his eyes trained on the front door, silently praying that Anita was distracted by her hopeless search to pay attention to his vehicle.
"Are you Jorge Billings?" The man finally asked, and Jorge battled to keep his breathing even.
"W-who wants to know?" He asked, his voice rough and scratchy. He cleared his throat and continued looking ahead. "Who are you and what do you want? How did you find me?" He asked, and the stranger chuckled.
"So, you are Jorge Billings." He stated in his deep voice, from his strong and wrinkled hand, Jorge could tell that it was an old man. "Listen, young man, I am not here to cause trouble. I was the one that found your sister at the gravesite." Jorge's features tensed and his mind went blank for a millisecond.
"Wh-what did you...what did you just say?" He stuttered, his breaths coming out harshly.
"I was the one that found your sister at the gravesite, and I saw the men that brought her there. They are from around here, in the Cape and hulle is gevaarlik." The man said. "They brought her there and threw her in the hole, then they took pictures of her while she was lying inside, unconscious. It started raining, and they left her there. I waited until they left before I got her out and called an ambulance."
Jorge's knuckles had turned white and he was holding on to the steering wheel as if his life depended on it. "I– how did you know she was my sister?" He asked.
"That doesn't matter. What matters is that your sister is a very important person, and I know that if this got out, all hell will break loose." The man said calmly.
Jorge gulped, unsure what to say, he took in a sharp breath and turned his desperate eyes to the stranger. "What is it that you want? Is it money?" The man shook his head and took out a small envelope, handing it over to Jorge.
"I am not that kind of a person, Mr Billings. I only came to give you that list of guys you might actually need to protect your sister, that's all." He said and stepped out of the car before Jorge could say anything.
Jorge threw the envelope on the now empty seat and stared at the opened gate. A thought of the man Anita spoke about crossed his mind, and he realised that maybe this place was not as safe as he thought it was.His eyes wandered to the paper on the seat before he reversed out and sped away from the house.
