Somewhere inside the school, Jordi and Asher were attempting to cheer up Evelyn.
Evelyn was not herself at all today. It was like she swapped personalities, and the sunlight she emitted everyday was replaced with a huge cloud of sadness hanging over her head.
Jordi side hugged Eve, hoping it would help, even by a little. "At least he didn't full-on break up with you for other reasons. Stuff like this happens all the time"
Eve acknowledged her friend's good intentions so she nodded, yet she didn't feel up to physical contact so she just pushed Jordi off lightly.
Jordi sighed a little, putting her hands in her pockets. "I'm gonna go uhm...run to the restroom" She turned and walked off. In reality, she was really going to look for the other three.
Evelyn didn't respond. She continued to stand near the classroom until it was time for class to begin, her head down.
It was just her and Asher now.
Asher was silent for a few beats before speaking up. "Hey uhm....I'm sorry about what happened."
Evelyn looked up at him with a sad face, yet she didn't have the courage to speak up yet.
"Maybe it's for the best, Eve. Maybe he just wasn't the right one"
Suddenly, the sad face turned into a glare. It wasn't a hateful one, but one that spoke of objection against what was just said.
"Don't...you dare..say that about him..."
"Sorry- I didn't mean for it to come out like that. I'm just saying, what if he wasn't the right one for you. He's a great guy, just maybe not the perfect match for you"
Eve looked down again.
"If he's not the one, no one else is"
"That's not true, Eve"
"How would you know?!"
The normally sweet girl reached her boiling point, and the words she spoke came out like venom.
Asher didn't flinch. He by all means understood what she was going through, and snapping back is never beneficial.
This is not you, Eve. But it's okay, I'm here for you.
"Take a deep breath." Asher looked at her confidently as he advised her.
"No! I refuse to believe this!" She stormed into the classroom and slammed the door shut behind her. If one could listen closer, they'd hear the girl sobbing quietly on her desk.
He sighed and quietly went in after her. He found her sitting down in her own seat, so he went and sat down next to her. "Eve, take some deep breaths" Asher repeated his advice while he carefully took the poor girl's hand, rubbing it with his thumb.
Evelyn sniffed a bit before looking up.
"I'm sorry, Asher...I know you and Jordi are trying to help me, but I just can't....I can't forget how long I've wanted him...All I ever wanted was to spend my days with him..."
"I know Eve, but sometimes things just don't go as planned"
She nodded slowly and wiped her face. It dawned on her just now that he was holding her hand, she looked down at it with a comprehensive look.
Asher gave her a small smile. "How about me and you go get ice cream after school today? I heard ice cream helps a lot with this"
Evelyn smiled for the first time that day, and nodded slowly.
"Of course....Thank you, Asher" The blonde leaned in slowly and kissed Asher's cheek as a thank you.
He smiled as well, a light blush creeping onto his face. "Glad I could help"
"What flavor do you like? I prefer vanilla" Evelyn asked, perhaps on the way back to her normal cheery self.
"Hmm. I like vanilla as well, but also chocolate"
She giggled slightly.
"If you want to, we can just buy one and share it" Eve giggled some more.
He smiled more. "I'd love to"
They shared another giggle, and their hands never parted away...
