At the infirmary, Matt's been treated. His injuries weren't that bad, much to Mike's and Eve's relief. The latter sat beside him on the bed while Mike stood in front of them awkwardly.
"I'm sorry about that, Matt...I never expected Asher to do that..."
"It's fine, Mike. I deserved it anyways"
Eve patted him. "Please don't say that, Matt"
"We would never want you to be harmed, Matt. No matter how toxic you get" Mike reassured him, though Matt was still unconvinced.
Mike replayed what just occurred in his mind, and he got an idea.
"I'll leave you both then since...I feel like you need to talk..."
Mike left afterwards, and it was just Matt and Evelyn..
Outside, Mara, Jordi and Rose were just trying to hold onto each other for mental support but that proved to be difficult.
Mike soon joined the three girls and approached Mara slowly. "You okay?"
Mara had somewhat calmed from the small panic attack the yelling had caused her, now she just looked... empty. She gave a small shrug in response.
Mike hugged her and caressed her back. "Shh, it's okay. I'm here now"
Jordi scoffed. "I knew boys would bring trouble"
"We're still human, Jordan" Mike replied, and Jordi just rolled her eyes.
Mara leaned into the touch while Rose eyed Jordi quizzically.
"Let's hope everything gets a little better tomorrow. Matt's already feeling better and Eve will stay with him for a while, no problem" Mike explained.
"Let's go home" He held Mara's hand and started walking.
Mara quickly followed after Mike and the other two hesitantly followed as well.
Back inside, Matt and Evelyn were still in awkward silence, though the latter managed to muster the courage to hold the boy's hand for comfort.
"Did you know that Asher wanted you as well?"
The question took Evelyn by surprise. She let it sink for a moment before answering reluctantly.
"Yes..After you and I had that uh...incident, he asked me to go get ice cream with him"
Matt managed a weak chuckle. "I hope you enjoyed yourself with him..."
Eve shook her head. "I didn't go"
"What?" Matt raised his eyebrows, puzzled.
"After he said he wanted you hurt, I called it off"
"Oh...I see"
"Even after that, I still really...like you, Matt" Evelyn explained, blushing slightly.
Matt looked up at the girl beside him and saw her smiling through a flushed face. He smiled a bit back at her before it fell.
"Eve.."
"What?" Her happy expression fell down from his sorrowful tone.
"This is unhealthy for you. What you have for me is just gonna hurt you even more"
"Matt..."
"I had hoped you and Asher would finally get together because you deserve someone better. You're wonderful, cute, pretty, nice and friendly. You're my antithesis, basically and I..." The boy choked briefly on a sob.
"I never understood what you see in me..." Matt was blushing as well by the time he finished talking.
"We can't control our feelings, Matt, and we don't have to look for a reason as to why you feel a certain way towards someone. I like you because well...it's you. And there's only one you in this world"
Matt didn't reply. Instead, he sat there thinking, but to his surprise, Evelyn spoke up again.
"But you are right about something...I always had doubt you felt the same but I ignored it, pushed it away and just pretended. I could tell that you weren't interested, yet I kept praying that you would eventually. You're the true kind soul here, Matt. Not me"
Hearing the girl talk so lowly about herself hurt Matt even more on the inside, and she kept going before he interfered.
"So, I'm really sorry. None of this wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for me" She stood up, facing away from him.
"We're all partially to be blamed, Evelyn"
"Still, I apologize. I promise to be a good friend for you from here on out" She started leaving the infirmary but...
"Evelyn, wait!"
The girl spun back around with a worried expression at his urgent tone.
"There's one more thing I lied to you about" Matt stood up and walked over to her slowly.
"Wha-"
And right there and then, Evelyn's dream came true.
Her longtime, first crush's lips were on hers.
