Knock me down, it's all in vain

I get right back on my feet again

The tension among the Avengers was rising. Loki's evil influence was affecting everyone. While the team tried to deal with the impending threat, Alice found herself entangled in a psychological battle with Loki.

"He really grows on you, doesn't he?" Bruce attempted to lighten the mood.

"Loki's gonna drag this out. So..." Steve turned his attention to the god. "Thor, what's his play?"

"He has an army called the Chitauri." Alice settled into the chair next to Steve, trying not to interrupt Thor. "They're not of Asgard, nor any world known. He means to lead them against your people. They will win him the Earth, in return I suspect, for the Tesseract. As for his obsession over the strong lady, I have no idea."

"An army?" Steve asked. "From outer space."

"So, he's building another portal," Bruce chimed in, "That's what he needs Erik Selvig for."

"Selvig?" The doctor's name spiked Thor's interest even more.

"He's an astrophysicist," Bruce explained.

"He's a friend," the god informed the team.

"Loki has him under some kind of spell, along with one of ours," Natasha added, visibly upset about what was happening with Barton. "He tried to use it on Alice, but it didn't work on her."

"I wanna know why Loki let us take him," Steve insisted. "He's not leading an army from here."

Alice tuned out from the rest of conversation.

She was trying to figure out why Loki was so fixated on her and why the spell didn't work on her. Was it because she killed so many people that she didn't have a heart anymore? Was he obsessed with her because her soul was as dark as his? And, most important of all, why did she feel attracted to someone as vile as Loki? She was so distracted by her own thoughts that she didn't even notice Tony entering the room. Her brain was full of thoughts, thoughts she didn't comprehend, and that was driving her crazy.

"Alice, are you okay?" She was snapped out of her trance by Steve, who was visibly worried about her friend. "You've been quiet the whole time."

"I'm fine Steve, don't worry." She tried to smile, but he noticed it was fake.

"You know he's only messing with your mind, right?" He put his arm around her shoulders, trying to appease her. "That's what he does. He tricks people. He's a trickster. You don't have a dark heart, Ali. Your past does not define your present and future."

"I know, I know. Really, I'm fine Steve. Don't worry" She smiled again, this time for real, but Loki's words were still echoing on her mind. "I'm going to the bathroom, be back in 5."
