Confidence dies

A little everyday

You lose your way

I lose it too

As Alice made her way home on foot, her mind replayed the encounter with the Winter Soldier. Despite his attempt to kill her, the fact that he was still alive offered a glimmer of hope. She believed she could help him escape that life. But what made her even happier was that his escape implied he remembered her. He must have, or he wouldn't have fled without killing her, without completing his mission. If he didn't remember her, she would have been dead by now.

The stairs to Steve's apartment seemed endless as Alice ascended slowly. Blurred vision and aching limbs accompanied her every step. As she reached his front door, ready to knock, her strength gave way, and she collapsed to the ground.

Amid recounting his ordeal to Fury, a loud sound resonated through Steve's apartment. Hushing Fury, he cautiously opened the door, only to be horrified by the sight of his best friend, bruised up and bloodied, collapsed on the floor.

"Ali? Hastily, Steve lifted her and laid her on his couch.

"Is that Onyx?" Fury asked in disbelief.

Gunshots suddenly pierced through the apartment's window, striking Fury thrice in the torso. Steve reacted fast, shielding Alice with his own body. As the gunfire died down, he ushered Fury and Alice to the kitchen, where there were no windows.

Gasping for breath, Fury handed Steve a flash drive. "Don't. Trust. Anyone," he urged before losing consciousness.

Unexpectedly, loud thuds echoed from the front door. Prompting his shield to cover himself, Steve got ready to confront the intruder.

"Captain Rogers?" Kate, the nurse from the apartment in front of his and Alice's, stood with a gun in hand. "Captain, I'm Agent 13 of Shield Special Service."

"Kate?" Alice, now awake, asked their neighbour, bewildered by her dual identity.

"Are you okay?" Steve asked Alice, kneeling beside her.

"The man... the man who was a soldier with me... he..." Alice stuttered between hiccups. "He's back. He came back for me, Steve."

"What?" Steve exclaimed.

"Captain Rogers, Agent Onyx, I'm assigned to protect you," Kate informed, glancing at Fury's unconscious body.

"On whose orders?" Steve inquired.

"His," she replied. After assessing Fury's condition, Kate radioed for medical assistance. "Foxtrot is down, he is unresponsive. I need EMTs. Onyx was attacked too, but she's in better conditions."
