Where Are You Going?
We held a funeral for Sophia.
Carol didn't show up.
Losing a daughter must be hard.
It didn't take long for people to leave the sullen event, filing back into the house or the camp to grieve their respective losses.
"Hey, you okay?" Glenn asked gently, crouching down to meet my eyes. He had been checking up on me a lot today, and I didn't need to ask why.
"I think I'm gonna stay here, just for a bit." I looked down at the grave where she lay, the fresh dirt piled high on the slightly smaller rectangle.
Glenn nodded sullenly and left, reminding me I could talk to him if I needed to. I expected to hear that a lot. I already got it from Lori and Rick, and now Glenn. Were they worried about me? Is it because I didn't cry at the funeral?
I didn't know Sophia well, if anything I didn't miss her so much as the future we could've had together. But I didn't need to know her to realise she was my best friend.
"Hey, Sophia," I whispered as I kneeled down, "I'm sorry this happened to you. I'll take care of your Mom, if you promise to take care of this."
I gripped the small, dry heather in my hand, burying it in a shallow hole on her grave. I wasn't particularly knowledgable about plants but I hoped one day it would grow into a flower, marking where she was forever.
I didn't want to watch the others move the bodies of the dead so I headed back to camp, my depressed sulk lifting slightly once I got there. It was empty aside from Daryl, who was frustratedly tearing down his tent.
"Where are you going?" I inquired, my eyebrows creased with confusion. He looked up from his task and scoffed, a subtle eye roll being sent my way.
"Why don't you mind your own business, leave me alone." He replied in a harsh tone, folding the material haphazardly and stuffing it into a bag.
Seeing him act like this, after I was so certain he was changing, felt like a punch to the gut. Maybe he was taking this Sophia thing hard than I thought.
I didn't want to do anything to make Daryl more mad so I wandered back up to the house, huffing with every step. When I got there I noticed Rick and Glenn loading up the car, getting ready to leave for reasons I didn't know.
"Where are you going?" I pulled Glenn back, urgency written on my face. He tossed a gun into the car and turned around to speak to me, his hands on my shoulders.
"Um, Beth passed out. We think she's in shock after...what happened. And Hershel left, so we need to go get him." He spouted the information, my mind racing to keep up with it. "We're gonna be back soon, okay? It's an easy run, in and out."
I hugged him goodbye, "stay safe." I mumbled, my lips turning up in a weak smile as he messed up my hair.
Rick came over from the other side of the car and I hugged him too, making him stumble back in surprise. "Promise me you'll keep him safe?" I asked, my arms tightening.
"I promi-"
"And yourself, too." I added, looking up from the embrace. "I don't want Carl to lose anyone else."
He finally hugged me back, promising me they would return safely before ducking into the car, the engine rumbling as the key turned.
"Why don't you hang out with Maggie? She's over on the porch." Glenn told me through the window, jerking his head towards the stark white building.
