Building Blocks Of The Future

"If you keep knocking it over, you're never gonna finish it." I sighed, gathering the multi coloured blocks scattered on the carpet. Judith was whimpering at the sight, her tiny fingers gripping a purple one weakly as she watched me clean up the mess. I had been babysitting her all day, and she had developed some kind of routine. Build the blocks into a tower, knock it over, then cry about it. Keeping my patience with the child was becoming an unexpected challenge.

She stood on wobbly legs, placing her block on top of another, giggling when I arranged more in the pile. I knew what would happen next, but I still kept building.

I squinted out the window, seeing the orange sky fading into a dusty violet, the sun hovering on the horizon. I got to my feet, kicking the blocks to the side and bending down, taking Judith into my arms.

"I think it's past your bedtime, huh?" I mumbled, feeling her arms wrap around my neck as I climbed the stairs one by one. By the time I reached the top she had already been lulled to sleep, her blonde head of hair resting against my shoulder.

I unlatched her fingers from my T-shirt, laying her in the crib and pulling a blanket up to her chin as she let out soft, rhythmic breaths. I leaned over the bars, brushing my lips against her forehead in a light kiss before switching the light off.

"I made a promise, Rick." Tara's voice travelled from the kitchen, reluctance in her tone.

"I know, but you're doing the right thing in telling me. We need the guns, they have them." He assured her, and I heard a crinkle of paper. "Show me where this place is."

I hurried down the stairs, my footsteps padding on each step with delicacy. I rounded the corner to find Rick and Tara leaning over the table, focused expressions on their faces.

"I could hear you, from upstairs." I announced my presence, seeing both of their heads snap up at my voice. "What's going on?"

Rick beckoned me to the table and I glanced down, seeing a large map of the area. I could see the coastline and borders of each state, a circle drawn around one beach in particular.

"I found another community while I was gone. They have guns, a lot of them. More than they need." Tara relayed, her fingers rubbing against her chin.

I furrowed my eyebrows as Rick continued for her. "They've set up here, and Tara said they keep an armoury over here." He pointed to the circle, pulling out a second map that seemed to zoom in on the community. I listened to their explanations intently, my mind working as fast as it could to figure out a plan.

"We're only going for the weapons, no one needs to get hurt." Rick reminded me with a stern tone. "We use the explosives we found, set them off outside the walls. Tara said it was a pretty clear area."

I furrowed my eyebrows in thought. "You said you met the leader, Natania, right?" Tara nodded at my question. "You should talk to her, tell her the plan. She might not like you, but at least she knows you. The rest of us can round up the people, keep them together so we can protect them and keep an eye on them at the same time."

Rick nodded in agreement, folding up the maps and papers. "I'll tell the others in the morning."
