The Name's Dixon, Doctor Dixon

"Doctor Carson." I announced my presence in the medical trailer when I saw the man standing over a patient. He looked up and smiled when he saw me.

"Please, call me Harlan." He told me sincerely.

I nodded slowly. "I just wanted to thank you for helping Maggie. I've been reading that book you gave me, it's really helping. But boy, am I glad she's staying here." I continued, my tone showing how relieved I was. I knew I was in way over my head before I met this man.

"It's no problem, really. You're staying here now?" He asked as he turned back to the patient, a woman with a graze on her forearm

"I was thinking about it. I know I could learn a lot from being here, but I'm really needed in Alexandria right now. We lost our other doctor so now it's just me." I pressed my lips in a firm line at the mention of Denise.

"Well, while you are here, you mind helping me out?" He gestured to the door, where a new person stood, an expression of pain in her eyes as she cradled her arm. Harlan beckoned her to a seat and inspected the injury.

"It's probably just a sprain," He gestured for me to go to him, "this is Belle, she's gonna sort you out." He gave me an encouraging smile before turning back to the other woman.

It felt strange treating this stranger, almost uncomfortable. By now, I knew pretty much the whole of Alexandria from fixing wounds, administering medication and just routine checkups.

"Sweetheart, you don't need to look so nervous. I ain't gonna bite." She told me kindly, making me smile up from her arm. "I'm Tammy Rose."

"Sorry. How'd this happen?" I tied a knot around her wrist neatly.

She shrugged with a look of exasperation. "Would you believe this happened because I lifted a box of potatoes? Earl's always telling me I take on too much, guess that man was right." She finished with an amused shake of her head.

"Well, maybe listen to him next time. And keep away from those potatoes, you don't wanna strain it any more." I placed her arm by her side and stepped back. She got to her feet and smiled in thanks, sending a small wave to Harlan as she left.

The residents of Hilltop were mostly farmers or blacksmiths, and I knew it would take a lot of work to make them into fighters. People like Tammy Rose, the sweet but weak of the community, were the kind of people we needed to protect.
