I'm Gonna See Them Again

"He's with Nicholas?" I exclaimed. Michonne had returned from outside the walls, and wanted to explain to us what exactly happened out there.

She and Glenn were with a smaller group to divert the herd, and Glenn decided to split off with Nicholas to create a distraction. But I still couldn't forgive the cowardly man for what he did. First Noah, then attacking Glenn in the woods. I didn't feel safe with the two of them out there together.

"The town was overrun. He had this idea that if he lit a fire, it would stop the walkers coming here. I tried to go instead. I wanted to. The fire never got lit. We had to keep going. I'm sorry. He said if he got stuck, he would find a way to send us a signal."

"A signal?" Maggie asked from my side. The worry in her features made me fear the worst, but I knew Glenn was still out there.

"Open the gate!"

We all span towards the echoing sound coming from outside.

"Open the gate!" It was Rick. I got to the gate, dragging it open and seeing something that made my mouth hang open in shock.

Rick Grimes, sweating and panting as he ran as fast as he could, hundreds of walkers growling behind him. He fell inside the walls, catching his breath on the ground as Michonne pushed the gate shut, the squealing wheels drowned out by the walkers, which were starting to wrap around the community, surrounding us completely.

The whole of Alexandria stood by the metal walls, listening to the clanging and snarling of the walkers outside. Most of them were frozen in fear, others had lost expressions on their faces or tears in their eyes.

"You can hear it." Rick addressed the community. "Some of you saw it. They got back here, half of them."

This was half? I couldn't begin to imagine the size of the full herd.

"Still enough to surround us twenty deep. Look, I know you're scared. You haven't seen anything like this. You haven't been through anything like this. But we're safe for now. The wall's gonna hold together. Can you?"

Lots of people let out scared whimpers, others placing shocked hands over their mouths. We had handled herds before. In Atlanta, on the highway where we lost Sophia, at Terminus. We just needed to fight through this, same as every other time.

"The others, they're gonna be back. Daryl, Abraham, Sasha, they have vehicles. They're gonna lead them away, just like the others. And Glenn and Nicholas are gonna walk back through the front gate after."

My mind was split in two. Half went to the danger they were in from whatever threats lay outside the walls, but the other half was glad they weren't trapped in here with us. No one had any idea where Daryl and Glenn were right now, but at least they weren't here.

"We keep noise to a minimum. Pull our blinds at night. Even better, keep the lights out. We'll try to make this place as quiet as a graveyard, we-"

"This place is a graveyard." Francine complained. With an attitude like that, she would end up dead first.

I couldn't imagine what kind of situation we would be in if Rick's plan didn't lead the other half of walkers away. The people here didn't appreciate that his thinking probably saved them from a much sooner death. It felt like Rick had finally become their leader.

The group dispersed with an overall feeling of exasperation and panic, but one person in particular just seemed irritated. I watched as Ron stormed away, turning behind a house and disappearing. My feet moved and I realised I was following him, jogging slightly until I found him sitting behind a house, stabbing his knife in the dirt over and over.

"Hey." I quietly greeted, sitting beside him and tucking my knees under my chin. He ignored me completely. "I'm sorry I yelled at you. I just...I didn't wanna see you get hurt."

Still nothing.

I rolled my eyes. "Enid is out there right now. She doesn't know what's going on, I think we should find her." I suggested, and he frustratedly stabbed the knife into the ground once more, letting it go.

"I told her to stop going over the wall. I told her that it's stupid and dangerous. She's probably dead already." He spat, picking his knife up again. I frowned, watching his movements. I understood he was pissed right now, but that nothing to do with Enid.

"Remember how I told you you gotta protect your family? That's still what matters now, and Enid is a part of that...I hope I am, too." I urged, and he let out a dry chuckle.

"So far it's been more like you protecting me." He seemed to be more relaxed now, like his moodiness drifted away. "You're kinda scary, you know? Remind me to never piss you off, especially when you've got a gun in your hand."

I rolled my eyes, more lighthearted now as I laughed. "I would teach you how to use one, but I kinda can't right now." I wiggled my fingers in the cast. "But I bet if you asked Rick, he would show you. He's the best gun trainer I know. I mean, he's the only the gun trainer I know."
