Every Batman Needs A Robin
I couldn't take my eyes off the horde outside, my deep fears making me scan it for Whisperers every minute. It was difficult from up here but I managed to spot a few, their movements slightly too smooth to be dead. But I hadn't seen the person I was looking for yet, the one who led the walkers here. Beta was in there, somewhere, and I was determined to find him.
"Our plan is the same." My head turned at Gabriel's words, his voice echoing through the room as people gathered around. "Lead the horde away, just not from Oceanside as we had planned. Once the walkers are clear, we evacuate to Rendezvous Point B."
There was nagging feeling in my chest, like I just couldn't see a way out of this. We couldn't keep going from one place to another, on the run from Beta and his horde for so long. It was now or never.
"Luke. We ready?" Gabriel faced the man behind the table, his hands patting down wires and instruments as he nodded.
"Yeah, yeah. Uh, technically." When Luke stood I noticed the wideness of his eyes as he gestured to the speakers laid out in front of him. "So, these are the final pieces that we need to connect to the wagon. But in order for it to work, I gotta plug it in and then we should be good to go."
It didn't comfort me that we relied so heavily on this plan, but it was all we could think of in this short space of time. It was most likely safer, too, to draw the walkers off a cliff as opposed to fighting them by hand.
"That wagon is on the other side of the horde." Magna pointed out the fact that was weighing on all ours minds. The only way to lead the dead away was to go through them first.
Gabriel had apparently considered this as he addressed the crowd calmly. "Four groups. Two in each. One carries the cargo, one protects. It's crucial that all the equipment makes it to the wagon."
"I'll go." I stepped away from the window as several heads turned towards me, my daughters included. I could see the sad gleam in her eye but that only motivated me further- if anyone could do this, it was me.
Heather cut through the crowd, her little legs running towards me desperately. "No." She pleaded, her voice breaking with fear. Her arms wrapped around me in a tight hug as she clung to my shirt, my fingers brushing through her hair comfortingly.
I swallowed hard, facing the group once more. "We ain't all gonna make it. But if this is the plan that saves most of us, then we're gonna need all the help we can get." I met the eyes of a few people who quickly looked away, their bodies curling in to avoid my determined gaze. It eventually fell on Daryl who stared right back at me, his head nodding subtly.
"This is the only way." He agreed, stepping forward to show his support. Even when no one else was willing, I knew I could always rely on him.
Kelly stood from where she leaned against the wall, her hand raising. "If Daryl's going, then so am I." She said, causing a few murmurs of volunteer from amongst the group.
I felt an elbow nudge against me, my head tilting up to find Jerry's wide beam directed at me. "Every hero needs a sidekick." He offered, his axe resting on his shoulder.
My lips pursed in a smile as I suppressed my laugh, the tension filled atmosphere indicating it wasn't the right time to joke. But either way, having him with me was all I needed for my spirits to be lifted.

"Get away from the window." I muttered, tugging the curtain shut and dragging Heather away. She didn't complain as I pulled her down a hallway, but her sulk told me she miserable about something.
