Smoke In My Lungs And Fear In My Heart

I knew smoking was bad. No question about it, these things could kill you. It didn't take a genius to figure out why my mom would wake up in the morning to a heavy cough that never seemed to end, or why she would get worn out going to the store and back when she was barely thirty years old.

Each time I took a drag of the cigarette between my fingers it made me wrinkle my nose in disgust, but I got used to it eventually. I took them before I left for Hilltop, as a reminder of Daryl being out there. Something to keep me going. I never planned on lighting one, but the smell made me think of him.

"Those things will kill you." Enid sat on the trailer steps beside me. I stubbed it out quickly and put the remaining cigarette back in the packet, tucking it in my jeans.

"Did you really come here alone?" I ignored her comment. She seemed to think for a moment before giving up.

"I didn't wanna tell you, because you'd only worry...I came here with Carl." She hesitantly told me. "He went to the Sanctuary."

I bit my lip, feeling the usual stinging behind my eyes. I should've said goodbye when I could, and now I might never see him again.

"God, he's stupid." I let out a watery sigh. He was stupid for doing exactly the same thing as I would.

"He told me to tell you 'stay here'." Enid finished. "What did he mean?"

"I don't know how he knew. I was gonna go there, get Daryl back and kill Negan." I couldn't go now. With Carl gone and Jesus following, it could put them in more danger. "We still need to fight."

Enid nodded in agreement. "Have you asked the people here?"

"I wanted to. There's not a lot of fighters, but we can teach them. We taught Alexandria." I wondered how the people of Hilltop felt about the deal with the Saviors, and how we could use that to get them to fight. Gregory was firmly on the other side, there was no swaying him. But the people had power, and now they had us.
