What If This Is Our Last Chance?

Were you really expecting me to stop Daryl as he drew his knife? Was I supposed to tell him 'no' when he placed the point right in front of Dwight's eye as he shoved him against the stone wall?

"I want Negan dead." Dwight insisted, his breathing hard as Daryl pushed against his chest.

"That girl you murdered...she had a name. Her name was Denise and she was a doctor, and she helped people." Tara emotionally whispered.

"I wasn't aiming for her." Dwight replied. I could feel the pain and anger swelling inside my chest like it was telling me what do to. And it ordered me to unsheathe my sword and run it through the Savior's chest.

My arm bent back to grip the handle, the familiar scrape of metal filling my ears as I lifted it up, only to have my hand ripped away by Michonne. I couldn't hold back my glare, but the effect was dampened by the watery tears filling my eyes. I had to do it for Denise, I had to kill him.

Michonne shook her head gently, her grip on my wrist loosening slightly as her eyes gleamed with sympathy. I let the sword fall defeatedly back into its place, a weak sigh coming from my trembling lips. I knew she was right, I just didn't want to accept it.

It didn't matter how much he apologised, or how much he pleaded with us that he was against Negan, I didn't trust him. Even when Daryl let him go, and Rick accepted his help and made the deal, I didn't feel right. I didn't care if he really did hate Negan, I didn't care if he would help us win the war, I just wanted him dead.

The only reason I agreed was because he was our only chance of getting Sasha back alive. She stormed the Sanctaury alone, and now she was being held there.

"Negan's coming soon. Tomorrow." Dwight relayed the information. He could slow them down to buy us some time. The war was beginning sooner than I thought.

"Hey, you leaving?" I asked Enid as she loaded her bag into the nearest car.

"It isn't safe here. Rick wants us to go back to the Hilltop to update Maggie, keep the place secure in case things go wrong here." She replied, and I noticed a few others hopping into vehicles. "We're taking the kids, too. So they're not in the middle of a war zone."

I nodded in agreement. "You'll take care of Judith, right?." I hugged her tightly. "And stay safe yourself."

"I promise." She pulled away, meeting my eyes sternly. "But only if you promise, too. I wanna see you again."

I squeezed her hand, walking over to the gate. "I promise." The cars rumbled out of sight, the dust settling as I pushed the metal bars across the entrance.

"I thought you'd go to the Hilltop." Rick had an amused smirk on his face as he caught up to me, my hands on my hips.

"What, and miss all this? I can't sit out, you know that." I told him, noticing the thoughtful expression on his face.

"We've got the guns now. And the people. The Scavengers are gonna be here tomorrow." He reminded me.

"The Scavengers?" I laughed. It was certainly an interesting name. "What's the plan?"

Rick rubbed a hand across his chin. "I was hoping you'd tell me." He smiled. I stood by his side as he pulled open a map of the community.

"They're gonna come up here, so we could hide people behind the walls. It gives them cover and higher ground." I pointed up to the watch post by the gate. There was enough room there for several people to stand comfortably.
