I Didn't Think It Could Get Any Worse Than This, But Boy, Was I Wrong
"Eenie..."
"Meenie..."
"Miney..."
"Mo..."
He pointed the bat at everyone's faces, my heart jumping slightly every time it landed on me. If it was me, that meant it wouldn't be someone I cared about.
"And you..."
"Are..."
"It."
The bat hovered in front of a brave face. Abraham's face. His eyes remained hard as he accepted his horrific fate. I squeezed my eyes shut as my breathing seemed to stop altogether.
"Anybody moves, anybody says anything, cut the boy's other eye out and feed it to the girl, and then we'll start."
"You can breathe, you can blink, you can cry."
"Hell, you're all gonna be doing that."
"What's this, the third time this week?" I joked as Abraham walked into the infirmary, a disgruntled expression on his face. "Sit down, let me see."
I guided him to a chair and he held his hand out, bruises and cuts covering it.
"How'd this happen?" I frowned. It didn't look like his usual injuries.
"How'd you think? Slipped down the dang ladder and caught it on a tree." He replied, but his words didn't convince me. The patterns of these bruises were too familiar.
I shrugged, grabbing a wipe and cleaning the blood. "Yeah, right. I'd hate to see how the other guy looked."
He sighed, realising he had been caught. "Alright, I knocked the drywall a good one. Nothing it didn't deserve." He joked. "Good guess?"
"Nah, I've seen this before. My parents, my life, how I couldn't get out of it. I was a pretty angry kid." I offhandedly answered. I taped his knuckles together and wrapped a sterile bandage around them.
"No shit. Ever thought about being a Marine?" He chuckled. I playfully rolled my eyes, watching him leave with a nod of thanks in my direction. I knew it wouldn't be long until I saw him again.
A sickening crack rang through the clearing as Negan brought the bat down on Abraham's head, knocking him to the ground as blood seeped through his hair.
There was nothing I could do but watch. He didn't deserve this. He didn't deserve to die like this. I could feel my blood heating inside me as I watched Abraham struggle to his knees, red dripping into his eyes.
"Oh, look at that! Taking it like a champ!" Negan bellowed, smiling down at the man he was killing. I didn't understand. Why would he do this? I never thought Abraham could actually die, it had never even run across my mind. He was one of those people who could survive anything.
"Suck...my...nuts."
He didn't have time to say anything else as the bat was brought down again, my lips curling with pure anger. Rosita's sobs from beside me only fuelled the fire as Negan hit and hit, until eventually there was nothing left except blood and dirt. And even then, he kept going.
Abraham wasn't moving anymore. I swallowed hard, staring at the place where his head used to be.
"You guys, look at my dirty girl!" Negan admired his bat, the sheen of blood dripping to the ground as he twisted it in his hand. He took slow, taunting steps to Rosita's shaking figure, a grin on his lips.
