Family Is Whatever You Make It
"Back already?" I asked when Rick and Michonne walked through the front door, huge grins on their faces.
"We found Gabriel." Rick replied, before telling me what else they found. A whole new group, with the people and the motivation to fight with us. All we needed to do was find enough guns and they would join our side.
"You need that patching up?" I noticed a small wound on his hand, inspecting it closer to see it was a hole that went all the way through. He sat by the counter as I wrapped it up, the white bandage sticking to the injury.
"I'm glad, Rick. This is us fighting the Saviors, right?" I asked as I rested beside him.
He tested his hands movement before nodding his head. "You were right from the start. It just took me a while to see it." He held a soft smile on his face. "I'm proud of you, Belle. What you did at the Hilltop, and the Kingdom. Bringing these places together, to fight."
I bit the inside of my cheek to stop my eyes from watering. My heart ached from the emotions running through my veins because of his words. "I'm just doing what I can. I thought I gave up when Glenn died. I did for a while. I thought you did, too." I admitted in a hushed tone.
"I did. Losing him, I wish-I wish I could've protected you from that." He finally got out, a sad gleam in his eyes at the memory.
"That's not your job." I assured him, but he dismissed it.
"It is." He claimed, feeling certain about what he said. I pressed my lips together and wrapped my arms around him, feeling his own around my shoulders as he pressed a light kiss to my hair. I wasn't sure when it happened, but I realised now that I loved Rick like family. Because that's what he was.

I groaned when there was a knock on the door, hearing Carl mimic me as I hid my face under the sheet. The sun was too bright and I was too tired. I could've sworn it was only 6am.
Michonne laughed at us from the door, seeing our two heads peaking from beneath the cover as we tried to shield our sleepy eyes.
"We're going out." She told us and I peeked a single eye out in curiosity. "Rick knows a few spots we could hit up for guns."
I blinked in an attempt to wake myself up, but just ended up yawning as I nodded.
"You two better wake up soon, someone's gotta take care of this place while we're gone." She smirked, shutting the door behind her.
I fumbled around with the sheet, finally coming face to face with Carl as he tried to fall back asleep. I poked at his arm, my finger pressing harder and harder until he finally swatted it away with irritation.
I didn't stop annoying him even with his protests. "I think she means us."
