Just Like Chopping Carrots
"You gotta try to bring it down, don't stab up." Daryl took the machete out my hands, demonstrating on walker what I was supposed to do.
"Either way, the job gets done, so quit your complaining." We had been out here for an hour, our time hunting doubling as a weapons training. I had to get used to using the machete, because apparently I wasn't doing it properly.
"Just trust me, okay. I know what I'm doing." Daryl insisted. "Come on, let's keep moving 'til we find another one."
We trampled through the thick forest floor of grass and twigs, being careful not to make any noise.
"You think the prison will last?" I asked Daryl curiously.
"You think it won't? Keep quiet, you're gonna scare dinner away." Daryl hushed me.
I ignored him. "I thought the camp would last, and the farm. Look what happened to them." I kicked through a bush, leaves flying through the air and landing again.
"Yeah, well there's a difference between those places and the prison. We got fences now, strong walls. Nothing's gonna get through them." Daryl had given up, realising I wouldn't stop making noise and his efforts for hunting were wasted. "Come on, we can go to the river and catch some fish."
"Why do you put up with me, Daryl? I mean, you could tell me to stay back, you could tell me to piss off. Scram, get outta here, take a hike. That's what you used to say. What changed?" Once I found out Daryl wasn't actually that scary, he had become my favourite person to annoy. But as the days wore on, he started getting less annoyed and actually started enjoying my company.
He shrugged his shoulders, cutting through a web of branches. "You wanna learn how to hunt, I know how to hunt. Most of the time I can't even tell you're here...most of the time." He added with irritation in his voice. I rolled my eyes. If it was any other day, I would've listened to him and kept my mouth shut. But I knew we already had enough food in the prison, he was just doing this to get out. I could understand how he felt, feeling trapped behind the walls, in the cell block. That's why I came out here with him.
We got to the river and Daryl started making a trap, burying it in the trickling water. He started speaking, only realising I wasn't beside him halfway through his sentence.
The weather was nice today. Nice enough for a swim, I thought. I had rolled up my trousers and tugged my shoes and socks off, stepping into the river. The water was cold, not too deep. It only reached my knees. I walked through, watching the clear water running past my legs. It was so clear I could see the algae covered rocks my feet stood on, and fish speeding along with the current. I dipped my hands in the water, before submerging myself up to the waist. My clothes were wet now but I didn't care. This was the most free I had felt in a long while.
"Come on in, the waters great!" I gleefully yelled back at Daryl. He grabbed the trap out the water and started wading towards me, placing it nearby. I decided against splashing him. He was in a good mood now, actually smiling at my antics, but I didn't want to push my luck. He snapped the trap out the water once a fish was trapped and I glided over to see.
"Can we let it go?" I pleaded. He looked at me with confusion, keeping the fish up high as it flipped around. "Please. Just this once. We got enough food at home."
Daryl rolled his eyes and sighed, releasing the fish back into the water. I grinned at him, his sour expression soon changing to an almost amused one. "Come on. If we ain't here to catch fish, we might as well head back." He started striding through the water. I stood up and followed behind him, forcing my legs forward against the current. I hopped out and shivered, my wet clothes being touched by the air and freezing quickly. Good thing it was summer.
We arrived back at the prison, slipping through the gate and entering the cell block. I went to my cell to get a change of clothes when Carl said, "What the hell happened to you?"
I giggled. "I went for a swim."
