Get What You Give

The beam of yellow light illuminated the blood as it splashed over my clothes, the blade of my sword sliding smoothly from the skull of the nearest walker. I winced at it dripped on my cheek, wiping it off with a bandaged hand in disgust.

I couldn't be sure how long we had been in this cave- a few hours, definitely. Maybe it was already night again, or maybe night had passed and the sun was shining once again. We couldn't tell from our position deep underground.

"Hey, guys?" Jerry's voice was concerned as he got our attention, my eyes following the direction his finger pointed.

Way up above, almost too distant to see, was a burning speck of fire. Attached to it was a wooden pole, gripped in the hand of none other than Alpha herself.

Carol's sudden, angered scream caused my blood to boil, every nerve sparking in pure fury as I set eyes on the evil woman. She was so close but just out of reach, lucky for her. Who knew what would happen if any of us got our hands on her.

The area was dark again soon enough, the leader stalking out the only apparent exit with her burning torch. But the feeling was still there, the anticipation and determination to get the hell out here, the need to see her head on a spike.

'Because karma's a bitch, right?'

"Right." I muttered to myself, driving my sword into a walker as it rose from the crowd. The mass of dead bodies moved like a wave, up and down, as they forced themselves forward. Sometimes one or two got a foot in and managed to work their way up but they were quickly put down, their bodies falling into the heap below.

I heard a scuffle from the wall as Magna tumbled down, loose rocks pattering over the ground with her. It was a good idea, at first, but it appeared as though the walls were too smooth to go up. There weren't enough ridges to get a grip, never mind the distance you would have to climb.

Daryl's torch light bounced over the walkers heads, analysing every part of the ocean beneath us carefully. The beam landed on a boulder in the middle, breaking the horde as they surrounded it. A few feet away was another smaller one, followed by a narrow ledge beneath a barely noticeable trickle of water. I figured the only place it could've come from was outside, so it was our best bet of escaping.

"We use those to jump across." Aaron realised, pointing to each boulder as he relayed the idea to the rest of the group.

I shook my hands to release any tension, my muscles becoming loose in preparation. "Okay, sure. Who's going first?" I glanced around, my eyebrows raised as I waited for someone to step up.

And sure enough, it was Daryl, a grunt of effort ringing out before I could stop him from jumping. I didn't want to say it, but this seemed like a terrible idea.

Carol was next, her arms held out for extra balance as she nimbly leapt to the first rock, a slight wobble in her posture before she straightened herself. I was so on edge about her falling that I didn't even notice Daryl had successfully made his way across, his hands outstretched for the woman as she jumped over the curling fingers of the dead.

Magna was next, then Jerry, and then it was Kelly's turn. She limped over to the ledge, her nervous eyes flitting over the walkers underneath her. I knew it would be a struggle with her injured ankle, but she insisted she could manage it.

'I'll go first.' Connie signed firmly, meeting the worried gaze of her sister. 'Step where I step.' And with that she was leaping over the waving arms, her feet planting on the surface of the nearest rock with the slightest stumble.
