Love In The Middle Of War
"What are you thinking about?"
"The people out there. Enid, mostly. She's alone right now. I want her to come home."
I knew I shouldn't have been thinking about that right now, but in the comfortable silence my mind had a way of drifting.
The sun was dimly shining through the closed curtains, the weak beams illuminating the room slightly. Me and Carl lay apart, facing each other as our hands met in the middle of the bed. I almost felt content in this moment of peace, the air only disturbed by his soft laughter.
"What's so funny?" I asked with a feigned expression of hurt.
"You called this place 'home'. I'm just happy you're finally thinking of it like that." He shrugged. I realised he was right. I actually liked some of the people here. Enid was great, I hadn't spoken to Olivia much but she was a nice lady, and Ron...well, I was still making my mind up. He had been through a lot in the short amount of time I had known him, like the death of his abusive father, so maybe I would make a decision once he handled that. Deanna had switched herself off once Reg died, and while I couldn't blame her, she just wasn't able to do the tough thing and carry on through her losses. At least it allowed Rick to take control of the leadership here.
"I guess it is." I mumbled thoughtfully. Carl gave a small stretch and finally put his feet on the ground, getting dressed and turning to me.
"We should probably get up. It's almost ten and I told my dad I'd help him out. Ron asked for gun training." He shrugged. I was glad he listened to me.
"Can't we stay here? I'm still kinda sleepy, just for a little bit." I begged, making Carl laugh and deny my request. I huffed, standing up and putting some clothes on. "Fine. I should find Maggie anyway, see how she's doing."
I couldn't imagine how it felt for her right now. Not only was she pregnant, but her husband was lost out there right now and she had no idea where he was.
I kissed Carl briefly before heading downstairs, checking once around before sneaking back in my own house.
"Maggie?" I called as I walked up the stairs, finding her sitting alone on her bed. She sniffled as I walked in, wiping her fingers under her eyes. I joined her on the bed, taking her hand and linking our fingers together.
"I just- I feel like I should've had a sign by now, some-something to tell me he's okay." She hiccuped between words. I squeezed her hand and she looked up at me, seeing the determination and surety in my gaze.
"He's coming back, Maggie. They all are." I assured her. "But you're not gonna get a sign from in here."
I hurried into my room, changing my clothes and grabbing my sword. I took Maggie with me and we headed to the wall, giving us a clear view of the ocean of bodies below us, and the clear sky above.
"I'll be right up." I told Maggie as she climbed the ladder. I could see Rick fixing part of the wall not far from here and paced over. He stood once I reached him, shielding his eyes from the sun.
"Pretty nasty scar." He commented, pointing to my forehead.
I shrugged. "I've had worse."
"Same person who did that?" He was looking at my wrist and I nodded.
"Those people attacked this place...I killed them, Rick. I-I just wanted to protect this place, like you said, you know?" I got out, fiddling with the cast.
He had a regretful tone to his voice as he spoke. "I'm sorry you had to do that. And I'm sorry I put that on you. I never should've put that weight on your shoulders."
"I don't know why you did it, but it's okay. I kinda liked being in charge." I admitted. I had never had such a responsibility before, but it felt good being part of the big decisions.
"I did it because you're growing up. You're not a kid anymore, I've seen the way you think. You're good at this kind of stuff, Belle, you just don't know it." He placed a hand on my shoulder and I looked up, seeing a proud smile on his face. I would've smiled back if it wasn't for Maggie running over to us.
"That's Glenn. That's Glenn." She breathed, and I noticed the green balloons rising into the sky. My face held a wide grin as they floated away, quickly dropping at the sound wood cracking.
The whole community watched as the guard tower broke and fell, taking down the wall in front of it.
