It Must Be 'Beat Up On Belle' Day

"So, why did Glenn want me to keep an eye on you?" I asked Maggie, leaning back on the porch steps to see her face. She sighed out a laugh, seemingly contemplating something.

"I thought he was going to tell you...I'm pregnant." She admitted. My mouth hung open in surprise, quickly turning into an amazed expression.

"Oh my god, what? Pregnant? That's amazing, that's-" I cut myself off with a joyful laugh, embracing her tightly. "Well, we gotta- I mean, I've never delivered a baby before. Have you met the new doctor? I was just about to go, I can ask-"

"It's very early on, Belle. We've got time to figure it out. Now, you go see your doctor, I wanna talk to Deanna about the crops." She got to her feet and walked in the opposite direction, the joy never leaving my face as I followed her with my eyes. I was frozen in shock for a few minutes until I finally shook it off, heading to the infirmary.

"Denise?" I called out as I entered, looking around at the empty building. I heard a clanging and a few mumbles before a blonde woman with glasses stepped out a door, greeting me.

"Hi, I'm Denise. Are you here for a check up, I can-" She stuttered out, apparently nervous.

"No, actually. I'm Belle, I wanted to see if you needed any help. I've had some training and a hell of a lot of experience, so I just wanted to help out, you know?" I felt so confident in that moment, like I was proud of myself.

"Sorry, I'm a little nervous here. I'm a psychiatrist. I went to med school, I was even gonna be a surgeon, but after the panic attacks, I got really interested in psychology. And...I think I'm really trying to lower your expectation here." She gave a shaky laugh.

I smiled at her. "Well, maybe we can learn together then. We can teach each other."

The door swung open and the first thing I heard was Eugene's complaints. "It hams my biscuits is all. And going by cubic feet, the biggest building in the expansion and we're gonna waste it on a church."

I watched as he and Tara beelined to the medicine cupboard, searching through it and grabbing the aspirin.

"Hams my biscuits?" Tara questioned.

"Hams my biscuits. That's all I heard." Denise quickly uttered before glancing down at a book.

I smiled in amusement before making my over to the two. "Get much sleep last night?" I asked Tara, who nodded. "How much water have you drank today?"

"Enough. The aspirin's just because I got a little dizzy working on the guard tower. I'll be okay." She defended, popping the bottle open and swallowing two pills. After telling her to come back if it happened again, I turned back to Denise.

"Where'd you get your training?" She asked me curiously. I guessed she figured out I wasn't old enough to have any kind of formal education.

"A man called Hershel. He taught me everything I know, right from when I was twelve. I know, I'm just a kid, but-" She stopped me with a dismissive wave.

"No, it's okay. I know you were on the road a while, right? That's gotta be some pretty hardcore experience." I smiled slightly. She was so much nicer than Pete.

"I mean, sure, I've done about a thousand stitches by this point, but I'm still completely lost on the whole science-y, math part." I admitted, scrunching up my nose in confusion.

Now it was her turn to smile. "I'm sure I can help with that."

I left the infirmary feeling so much lighter. This was my purpose, to heal people. And now I had a friend to do it with.
