Home, Sweet Home
The gates of Alexandria swung open as I approached, coming face to face with Michonne's single raised eyebrow. I gave her a sheepish apology as she hugged me with relief, checking me once over.
"Carl's been worried. So have I." She told me with a soft smile, her hand brushing against my hair comfortingly. I assumed he would've been concerned when I didn't arrive like I promised.
"Sorry. Maggie wanted me to give you this." I held out the letter from my pocket, seeing her concerned look before she nodded.
She went back to her post and I hesitantly walked up the steps and into our house, checking around for Carl.
I found him sitting on the carpet, his hands holding Judith's as she took shaky steps towards him. He looked up when the door clicked open, his features swapping from curiosity to pure alleviation. He got to his feet immediately and held me to him, my face nestled against his chest as I hugged him back.
"Sorry I'm late. I just needed to take care of something first." I gazed up at him with fondness on my lips, meeting him in the middle as he kissed me. It didn't matter how many times we did it, the small gesture of affection seemed to give life to the butterflies in my stomach.
"I was just worried, I thought something bad happened." He looked me in the eyes like he could sense my bad mood, and I couldn't stop myself from spilling all my thoughts. About Maggie, about the Saviors and the prisoners and what he told me.
There's gotta be something after.
His gaze was on Judith's stumbling figure but his mind was elsewhere, his teeth grazing his bottom lip.
"I went looking for him, the man at the gas station." He admitted quietly as he avoided my look of disbelief. He cut me off before I could question him. "I know what you're going to say. But I had to."
He brought his knees up and rested them against his arms, a sigh forming in his throat. I couldn't wipe off my incredulous expression no matter how hard I tried. "We can't save everyone, I know that. So doesn't that mean that if we can save someone, we should?" He continued.
I had come to admire Carl's willingness to save people no matter what, it was a trait I envied. It baffled me how he could stick his own neck out and put himself in danger for someone he didn't know. Family was another matter. If someone I loved was hurt then I would do my best to keep them around, but that's where I drew the line.
"He wasn't there anyway." Carl interrupted my thoughts with a shrug.
"When are going back out?" I knew he wouldn't let this go, not until the stranger was confirmed alive or dead. I silently wished it was the latter. It would be one less thing to deal with.
"Tomorrow."
"Stay." I whispered, my eyebrows drawn with concern. I didn't want him to leave when he didn't have to, not for another person. "Just for tomorrow, I just got back."
He pursed his lips in a reluctant expression. "Please, Carl. If you stay tomorrow, then I promise...I'll help you find him." His lips turned up in a smile, agreeing to my offer. If I couldn't stop him, then I could at least help him.
