Maybe Time Really Is Dancing

One Week Later

"The stitches have already come out, just keep an eye on it and you should be fine." I smiled, watching as Daryl left. The stab wound on his back wasn't too serious, he could handle it. After the fight against the walkers, we all had jobs to do. Mine was dealing with all the injured people who passed through the infirmary, and there was a lot of them. It's a good thing Denise was here, and Rosita.

"Have you checked up on him today?" I asked them in a hushed voice, and they shook their heads with concern.

"You don't have to, I can-" Denise offered, but I stopped her.

"I think I should. I'll just do this and then I'm done, right?" I stepped over to the door on my left, hesitating on the handle before mustering up all my courage and swinging it open.

Carl had been avoiding me for too long now. I was a doctor, he was a patient. He was sitting on the bed, a comic book in his hands which he dropped once he noticed me.

"I thought Denise told you to take it easy. You can't strain yourself." I picked up the comic and set it by the bed, sitting on the chair. Carl kept his gaze down, not wanting to look at me. I knew why, but he would never admit it. There was a white bandage covering half his face and left eye, holding the injury together. It would take a long time to heal, in fact I wasn't sure if it ever fully would.

"I remembered some things. Some of them I wish I didn't...I shot my mom. I can't even remember her before that." He let out a dry chuckle and I frowned. I realised from the extent of the injury that there would most likely be some memory loss, but a lot of it was already coming back. "I remember you. I know we were friends...more than friends. But I can't remember enough to- we can't-"

"It's okay, Carl. I understand." I smiled gently. He finally looked up at me. "We can be friends, right?"

"Right." He nodded, picking the comic book from the table.

I held in my sigh, leaving the infirmary altogether and rushing behind it. I crouched on the ground and let out a small cry, stifling it through my fingers. I should've told him I loved him before.

"It kinda felt like a break up, but he didn't know it. I don't know if I can be just friends with him now." I whimpered. Enid sat back down on my bed, leaning across and holding my hand.

"You know he loved you before, you just gotta give him some time. You can't put too much pressure on him." She replied comfortingly.

"You're right. I should just be happy I have him at all." I nodded. "I'm gonna get something to eat, you want anything?" I asked, standing from the bed.

"Got any chips?" She wondered.

Enid had been hanging around with me a lot in the past week. I didn't mind it, she was good company. She told me that she found Glenn outside the walls and they helped each other get home. I didn't ask her why she left in the first place, because I could tell she was a different person when she came back.

I hopped down the stairs, rummaging in cupboards for the bags of chips, pulling out a few and grabbing an apple on the way. I almost dropped it in laughter when I saw Maggie and Glenn on the couch.

"God, you two are like an old married couple and you haven't even had your first kid yet." I commented, causing Maggie to glance up from her book. I made my way back to the stairs when Glenn's voice called out.

"You see Carl today?"

I turned slowly, placing the food on the step and leaning on the barrier. "Uh, yeah...he's doing okay. He's remembering more and more every day."
