Saturday Morning
Summer slapped face down on her pillow. Her alarm showed 11:32. She still hadn't gotten out of bed after waking up 4 hours ago. Her mind was swirling with different thoughts and feelings. She never felt this way before. She was so confused.
Summer felt like Cole had just broken up with her. He left her on the mall floor, so he did, didn't he? But he just kind of left her there, they didn't officially split or anything. To Summer, it felt like it though. But... Why wasn't she feeling sad? She was supposed to feel heartbroken, wasn't she? So then, why did she feel a sense of relief? It was as if she was wanting something like this to happen. The final push to send them to their breaking points.
Just then, she heard the doorbell of her house ring. "Who could it be?" Summer thought. She dashed down to the front door, surprised to see Cole waiting there with a guilty face when she opened it.
"Hey, I came to apologize."
Summer just stood there dumbfounded, her mind still swarming with thoughts.
"I'm sorry, I overreacted, I shouldn't have left you there on the floor."
Summer still didn't reply.
"I was just upset that you told Lexi I liked her. I felt like you were breaking our trust. But, it's not ok. I'm honestly so insanely sorry for leaving you at the mall." Cole paused. "So... now that we're good... I was thinking we could just forget it. We at least got our matching clothes? We can just meet Cassidy and Brett at the restaurant and have a nice-"
"Actually, Cole, I... don't think we should have the date," Summer said nervously.
"What? Oh, then... that's okay. I agree, it might be a bit too soon considering what just happened. So maybe we could just go to a cafe or-"
"No... Cole... I don't think you understand what I'm trying to say."
"So then... what are you trying to say?"
"Umm... Honestly, I think I'm d-done. I can't Cole! We just keep f-fighting and then m-making up, this is not what I ever wanted in a relationship. I-I can't." Summer started breaking down and sobbing uncontrollably into her hands.
"Summer... I-I'm sorry but... I love you..." Cole looked at Summer, fighting the tears that were coming to his eyes.
"Maybe we loved each other at one point, but we can't keep d-doing this. This isn't healthy!" Summer burst. "Yes, we hug and kiss and send texts, but are we ever genuinely there for each other? Can we ever fix a problem without arguing? And can we even go through one WEEK without fighting? I feel like we are always on the brink of splitting up."
"No... that's not true," Cole said softly.
"Yes, it is true. And you know it," Summer said. "I-I'm breaking up with you, Cole."
Cole stood there in front of his sobbing now ex-girlfriend in shock. He couldn't believe what had just happened. After all this time. After everything they did to try to make it work. It was for nothing.
"You should leave," Summer whispered.
"Ok... Can I hug you for the last time?"
Summer just nodded her head.
