It was classy. A little tacky too if that was to be pointed out. She could cut down a little on the foundation maybe.
"A little more?" She needed some wine. Of course she did. She was clung to her phone waiting for some text i think. Which, for all I know, would never come in.
"A little." We both giggled as we sat around the kitchen table and drank wine at 2 in the morning.
"So what are we staring at?" I asked Jess. "Let me guess—you either got some side hustle or your nerd boyfriend from Harvard isn't texting you back."
"It's just.... It's Allan's boyfriend."
"Are guys at Harvard so bad?"
"Seriously?" Her side-eyed-reaction was expected. "Jace actually kissed Ashley and it's really clear. I told Allan there must be an explanation but I really don't think there's one."
"Is that why he's been locked up in his room?" He wouldn't come out of his room. He barely even got out of his blanket.
"I've been here for just a day and it's clearly not my place to say anything at all but Jace is literally worth nothing—"
"...compared to the guys back in Paris." She didn't let me complete. "Yeah Carli we all know guys in Paris are fucking heartthrobs. But unlike you, Allan lives here. In Hamden. And Jace Gray is a very big deal down here."
"But why? All I see is good hair and a fashion sense that needs a little improvement. What's so great about this guy. I mean Cole is sexier than him." I protested and she probably saw that coming.
"Carli not everyone is about their fashion sense." Jessica looked back at the comments on Ashley's post.
"You do realize that's basically what I do at IFA, Paris? I got a gig at Dior just because I think everyone is a little bit of what they wear and how they present themselves so yeah. I don't see much personality in Allan's guy." She just kept refreshing the post. "Seriously what the fuck is this about?" I snatched the phone from her hand in frustration.
I read a few comments before i swiped up to the video. They weren't exactly nice. "One of them even called Allan a scapegoat." Jessica spoke. Most of them were about happy they are that Jace isn't gay. Absurd!
"So that's what Ashley looks like now?" I looked at Jess. She wasn't exactly happy with what i asked. "Clearly the wrong question. So. What's so great about him?"
Jess somehow calmed down. I was getting on her nerves just the way I used to when we were kids. It's fun to annoy your cousins sometimes.
"As I said he's a very big deal here. And like he's Allan's first. So you know.."
"Boy ain't this one gonna hurt!" I exclaimed.
"Obviously it's gonna hurt." We both turned around in a shock just to find Allan standing there. His voice was cracking up and he was right on the verge of crying. Again. He was wearing sweats and a black waist. Thick eye bags laced around his eyes gave away that he hadn't slept for what felt like ages and also that he has been crying a lot. "Obviously people love the fact that he made out with Ashley. Obviously he's a big deal." He opened the refrigerator and took out a bottle and slammed the door. "Obviously. I AM OBVIOUSLY! A FUCKING! SCAPEGOAT!" His anger was extremely evident.
He walked towards us and looked at the wine glass Jess was holding. Tears rushed down his cheeks as he spoke. "I'll be taking that." He snatched the glass from Jessica's hand and turned and started walking away. He turned agian and started walking towards us now. "And that too!" He reached for the wine bottle.
"No!" I slid the bottle back.
"Just give it Carli!" He groaned but with tears.
"No!" I stood firm. "If you really wanna sulk over him then sulk. No one's stopping you. But sulk while you remember it." I knew I was getting into his head. "This wine can make you forget him but only temporarily. You wanna get over him then do it while you're sober."
"Fine!" He nagged in anger and then banged the glass on the marble top. I was somehow shocked it didn't shatter. He rushed up the stairs. I had never seen him this pissed.
"Sorry I had to I just didn't know a better—" Once again Jess cut me off while I was speaking.
"Na you were right. He needs to remember getting over him if this is him getting over him."
"Sometime's you can be sensible too!" I taunted her and she rolled her eyes.
It's nice to be back here. I spent 13 years of my life here. I only remember it in bits and pieces but well I am still somehow familiar with this place. But Paris is better. Thank fucking God I got out of this town when I was a kid. It's a fucking dead end for life down here.
