"You got everything?" I asked Allan.
"Positive!" He confirmed.
"You sure?" I had to ask again. He always forgot something. That was a must.
"Do you have my phone?" He ruffled his pockets and checked the backpack.
"Why the fuck would I have your phone?"
"I don't know. You're my boyfriend." He knew he sounded stupid.
"Just go and check inside dumbfuck."
"NO! That's what I call you. Do something new." He walked back inside to search for his phone. Suddenly my phone rang in my pocket.
"Jace!" Mom was loud. More than she needed to be.
"Yeah?"
"Your dad really wants to see you. Just.. don't do anything stupid." She said. I would try not to.
"Alright!" I said.
Allan found his phone and waved it in the air to show it to me as he rushed to the car and jumped right in. "Give Allan the phone Jace." Mom said from the other side of the phone.
I handed the phone to Allan. It was nothing new or strange. Allan and mom were getting along more than I'd expected them to. Well he has always been the more parent-friendly one.
Seriously he could convince anyone for anything. Even adults to like him.
"Yep.... No.... Yeah I'll think about that.... Yep.... Okay!" I heard him speak. He let out a giggle and I just sat there like a fool looking at him, wondering what even were they talking about. "Alright.. Yeah.... Take care." He cut the call and handed the phone to me.
"What were you laughing about?" I asked.
"Nothing." He started searching for songs in his phone while pursing his lips.
"NO!" I launched at him for his phone. "You're not choosing music today."
"What the actual fuck?" He fished for his phone.
I placed my phone in his palm and spoke. "You are playing from my phone."
"JACE?! NO! WHAT?" He screamed. He looked adorable when he was mad.
"You always get to choose. I am still technically giving you the choice." I answered.
"But we both decided my music taste has always been better!" He argued.
I knew he would. "There's this big bookstore back in Morristown."
"FUCK. YOU." He criticized.
I grinned. "Play something now."
"Everything is just rap. I'm gonna cry. This is literal torture."
"I really don't care. Play."
And that he did. Watermelon Sugar by Harry Styles played as I drove over the edge of the town.
"I'm trying to find good songs here please at least don't sing along." He ordered as he sat there in a weird inexplainable position scrolling through a shit tons of songs on my phone.
"Buzzkill!" I called him.
"WHAT?" He looked up from my phone and stopped scrolling. "I'm your boyfriend."
"WOAH! That's new!" I giggled.
He rolled his eyes, gave me the finger and got back to scrolling and we both laughed a little. I wasn't really excited about this. But I guess it is a big deal that Allan is meeting dad.
I haven't met him since middle school. He didn't care. He had his other children. It bothered me for a while but then it was just something I never thought about anymore.
"We need bubblegum." Allan declared. I didn't. But well.
I took a turn and there was a gas station right by the end of this road. Soon he was buying gum while I waited there.
He came out the door with three full bags of what I suppose were snacks.
"They ran outa gum." He looked at me as he threw two bags at the back and kept one with him in the front. "I bought 3 cans of coke instead."
How did that make sense? "How does coke replace bubblegum?"
"Well something's gonna be in my mouth." He shrugged.
I took my face into my hands and then started driving again. "You're stupid as fuck."
"Dump me already lol!" He giggled as he opened a packet of chips.
"I really wish I could." I said, looking at the road.
"Gonna pretend like I didn't hear you say that." He said.
We drove in silence then. Initially Allan ended up playing his favorites before we were even halfway there. Morristown was an hour away from where we were currently. I felt a little nervous. But I know things will be fine.
I looked at Allan. He was either already asleep or trying to sleep.
At least he was gonna be there. If anything went sideways. He'd be there to handle me.
