"Mr. Colebrooks?" I heard my name as Mrs. Forman called it out loud in her soft, almost musical voice.
I softly ducked down and snuggled into my seat where it felt like I was invisible while everyone turned towards me.
"Mr. Colebrooks!" Her voice much more serious now "Where's your mind? The third question. Now. Please!"
I opened my book and started ruffling up from page to page when she said "Oh don't bother. I do not have another eternity. Betty, answer the question please!" Sarcasm laced her voice.
The oh-so-smart Betty answered the question without any delay. Like the answer was right on her tongue waiting to be slipped out. What even is it with these studious kids? Just then something hit my back. More like fell on my back. I turned around to look at what or who it was. Another one? Not again ugh!
My eye fell on the crumpled paper ball now lying on the floor, which i suppose was what fell on my back. I ducked down, picked it up and opened it.
" F A G G O T "
There it was. I let out a sigh. For the third time today, my sexuality was used as a slang on a crumpled paper ball and thrown at me. I turn back and find Jamie—the exchange student—and his friends giggling. Did he throw the page? Didn't he just arrive at the school? It's been what 3 minutes since he walked in and he is already friends with everyone! (but me) But i gotta understand, some people genuinely have an attractive personality. Unlike me. Who would like a mentally ill kid anyways?
The bell rang and the AP US History lesson has finally ended. I pick my books off the table and start to walk out the door for my appointment with Mr. Sanderson. Finally something that I slightly liked. But as soon as I reached the door, Mrs. Forman called out "Not you. Stay!" She pointed her finger towards me as she spoke in an affirmative tone.
Soon all the other kids were gone. I didn't want to be late for Mr. Sanderson's appointment but Mrs. Forman was not the understanding type. Why would she ask me to stay back? I had turned in my assignment before time. It took me ages to complete it which is a different story. But why was she asking me to stay back?
There was a brief silence as she got out of her chair and walked towards me. I glanced at my watch and it was already 12:47 pm. I was three minutes late already.
"Allan what is up with you?" Mrs. Forman asked in a concerned motherly tone as she leaned on one of the tables. How do i reply to that?
"Nothing. What would be wrong with me? I am all the same." I let out a hesitant smile but i am sure she didn't notice.
"If something's wrong you can always talk to me, okay?" Yeah sure. So you could go and blurt all of it in the teacher's lounge? No thanks Abigail Forman.
"Yeah sure!" I reply with yet another dull smile and rush out to Mr. Sanderson's office.
Just when i was running into Mr. Sanderson's office, I bashed into someone. It was a guy in this red t-shirt i recognized from the hallways probably. My books fell off my hands and i heard them rattle on the floor. Just as i got down to pick them up, I heard the guy saying "Jerk" as he continued walking away with the attitude and speed. Guess he probably heard about me from someone. People loved calling me that-jerk or that-homo anyways.
I dusted the dirt off my books and arranged them steadily in my hand as i walked into Mr. Sanderson's cabin. I looked at his face. He was thinking something. That's the frown he has when he is genuinely thinking something important. He almost seemed worried.
And then I understood. The guy in the red t-shirt wasn't calling me a jerk. He was calling Mr. Sanderson a jerk. Students hated him. He did have a habit of getting extra or trying to be cool. Explains all the attitude somehow.
"Who was that?" I ask with a sudden curiosity as i placed my books on his table. The kind of curiosity that was unknown to me myself too.
"Jace Gray. Why do you ask Allan?" He asked in his friendly tone. Just as usual.
"Cus i am pretty sure he just called you a jerk." I air-quoted the word jerk as he grinned.
