A while later, Jen was in recovery when Justin walked in the room.
He rushed over to her sat up in bed and hugged her tight.
They both burst into tears. It was not the day they'd planned and certainly not the way they expected to welcome their child into the world.
"How is he?" she cried into his shoulder.
He pulled her back and smiled weakly.
"He's beautiful... he's on a monitor but doing okay" he reassured her.
"I don't even know what he looked like... it's all a blur" she cried quietly.
He stroked her back, comforting her "I took a picture"
She smiled at him as he reached for his phone.
She grabbed the phone inspecting the photo closely.
"I can't believe this is the way I have to see my little boy" her crying got heavier.
"I'm sorry" he felt so guilty for seeing their son whilst Jen was still in theatre, only seeing him for a matter of seconds.
"No... don't be" she faced him, stroking his chest "I'm glad you were with him honey" she reassured him. She meant it. She was glad he wasn't alone.
He hugged her tight.
"Why didn't you look over the screen as soon as you knew he was born?" she asked quietly after a few minutes.
"I couldn't look at him before you... if something had happened... I'd never have lived with the fact I'd seen our baby whilst you were unable to move" he answered honestly.
She smiled weakly.
"I just want to hold him"
"I know... me too" he whispered.
Shortly after, the nurse came in to check on Jen.
"I'll get you a wheelchair and we'll go meet your baby properly"
Jen smiled thanking her.
"Did you call your mom?" she asked Justin as the nurse left.
"Briefly.. she sends her love and said Rosie's fine" he stroked Jen's arm.
The nurse returned with a wheelchair.
"Let's go see your baby shall we" the nurse said helping Jen into the chair.
Jen smiled at Justin as they reached the door of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. She was about to meet her son properly.
"Now everything may look scary and he's got wires over him but I can assure you he is doing fine" the nurse reassured her "I'll give you both some time"
Jen smiled softly as the nurse turned to leave.
Justin took Jen's wheelchair and pushed her past the other babies towards their son.
Jen bought her hands to her mouth when she saw him. She cried quietly. Justin rubbed her shoulders for support.
"He's so tiny" Jen whispered. She reached her hand through the small hole in the incubator, desperate to touch her baby.
She released a deep breath the moment her finger touched his skin.
Justin kept his hand squeezing her shoulder, watching the moment his wife bonded with their son for the first time.
Her eyes met with Justin's and they shared a look of love.
"He's our little boy" she sobbed.
"He's perfect" Justin added, tearing up.
