I wore a black button up blouse, paired with gray mom jeans to fit in the 'formal dress code' Max, Jenkins, Charlie, and George (George acted like Ash's lawyer in the past to set Ash free from jail and he's Max's real lawyer. ) had chosen to wear without really telling that to each other. Even though it kinda annoyed me, I couldn't blame them since they were adults—and had an actual job to be dressed so formal. So, to not feel out of place, and to not look like a street punk—I had dressed a bit more formal. I also styled my hair differently than I normally did, and put my glasses on so that I wasn't completely recognisable in case Dino's men would spot me.
Nonetheless, Max was able to fix us the chance to see Ash's 'dead body' at the morgue, even though I knew it was bull—I just needed to be sure that he was alive. I wanted to get rid of the fear in my heart. I knew Ash was alive, because my gut told me so—and he was too stubborn of a person to just die so mysteriously. We grouped up at the subway station, and from there on visited the Mental Health Hospital where Ash had supposedly died.
Finally, two men, also well dressed, lead us to a morgue in a big modern building which was known to be The National Mental Health Institute. They complained all the way trough till the end about us being able to see Ash's 'autopsy' because we weren't 'allowed to' due to some 'rules'. Rules are meant to be broken anyway.
"The city police is eager about their work—coming to witness the autopsy of an offender outside thier jurisdiction." Complained one of the two men.
"Thank you for letting us in here." Said Charlie to subside their complaints a little, but failed miserably since those two assholes kept complaining.
"But you're still outsiders. You'll have to watch from that window." Said the other one, pointing towards the window we stood outside of. Inside of the room laid a body of a dead person, covered in a thin cloth.
"I will witness the autopsy inside. Ash is my client." Said Ash's 'lawyer', George.
"Sure, but it's not a pretty sight."
"Let's start. We will now begin with the autopsy." Said the pathologist dressed in scrubs as he started to lift the white cloth off of the person who laid underneath it.
The moment the pathologist lifted the thin cloth, a gasp left my mouth. The person who laid there was Ash. No, he looked exactly like Ash. For a moment, I was convinced Ash was the one laying there as the pathologist started cutting open the boy's chest—to examine the cause of death. Max had to pull me aside upon noticing my disturbed state when the boy who looked exactly like Ash was getting cut open.
What if that was Ash? Did the boy also have a family he wanted to return to? Who was he? Thoughts like that kept surging in my head, back and forth as I stared wide eyed at the dead boy.
————"There's no mistake, it was Ash." Said Jenkins looking sick, putting a hand on his forehead as we sat on a bench in front of the building we just exited after watching the gruesome autopsy. Dead bodies didn't really bother me, but when seeing them getting cut open—the picture and thought haunted me.
"Max, I know how you feel. But at least our trip here wasn't futile." Said Charlie in an apologetic tone. I could tell he also felt bad for Ash's 'death' by his behaviour. Why a cop cared about Ash, that I didn't understand. But I could tell he only had good intentions for Ash, Jenkins and George too.
"Yeah, I'm positive now. He's still alive." Stated Max looking at me.
"Wake up Max, you saw him." Said George, still in denial.
"I can tell. He's like a son to me. He was just another boy that looked like Ash." Explained Max, defending his previous statement.
"That's why they didn't let Jenkins and Charlie inside. You guys are used to corpses and can't be fooled. And on top of that, I have definite proof that Ash is actually alive." I said, finally joining in on the conversation after collecting my thoughts.
