I stared outside the window as Blanca drove around New York, shot my head up at him when realized he took a wrong turn unfamiliar to the route of the International Mental Health Institute.
"It's not this way. Where are you going?" I asked, staring at Blanca's driving face.
"Gotta make a quick stop." He replied, turning into another corner, eventually stopping in front of a hospital. I stared at him with a questioning look, cocked my eyebrow at him in confusion as he parked the car.
"Ash is hospitalized here. He's out of ICU and is in the general ward now. Max and Shorter come around to check at 12.00 on the dot." He explained as I leaned my head against the window, fidgeting with the rings on my finger. "Go. You may never see him again." He nudged my side, indicating me to get out the car and go see Ash.
I sighed, shook my head at his request as I crossed my arms.
"What? Don't t tell me you're scared to sneak in the hospital." He scoffed, took his key out of the ignition.
"Shut up." I huffed, crossing my arms. "It's not that."
"Then what? I already got those doctor-lab-coats laying in the trunk. Get out, wear it and sneak in."
"Look." I massaged the bridge of my nose, taking a deep breath in before continuing.
"No, you look." Blanca interrupted me before I could say anything further, crossed his arms the way I did. "I had to make all the effort to find a lab coat, also had to find out where Ash was... And now you're gonna let all my effort go down the drain?!" He dramatically scoffed putting his hand over his mouth, looked like a fourty year old conservative mother who just found out that her kid did something bad.
His demeanor suddenly changed into a serious one, hands clasping each other. "Plus, it might be your last time seeing him. I wouldn't pass on that chance if I were you."
"You're so annoying." I kicked the door open, put the lab coat on once giving in on his proposal.
"12 o'clock, got it Cinderella?" Blanca said rolling the window down before fully out of my hearing range. I gave him a side glance of annoyance walking away from the car, towards the hospital.
I got easily in the hospital through the back entrance, walked through hallways keeping my head down in case someone would notice me. And finally, I reached the room where Ash was in. Hesitantly, I pushed the door open, slowly walked in the room.
He laid in those usual typical hospital beds, an IV drip attached to his arm, his body resting, blond hair disheveled across the pillow, eyes closed, at peace.
He looked so at peace, face void of any sort of emotion. He looked like a normal eighteen year old.
I glanced at the clock hung on the wall, realized I had less than 6 minutes left before Max or Shorter would spot me. They wouldn't let me go if they found me, because they knew I was planning to end it all, Banana Fish.
"Hey, Ash." I touched his hand, intertwined my fingers in his. "It's me." I let an uneasy chuckle out, held his hand in mine. "It's so weird, today is so weird. I think today is going to be the end of Banana Fish, the end of this hell. Remember when I promised you I'd stay with you throughout this? Look at us now, we're almost at the finishing line." I sighed, held his hand tighter.
"The difference is, you won't be by my side. You won't see how it'll end. But that's okay." I smiled, ran my thumb across the back of his hand. "It's okay. At least it lessens the chance of both of us dying. I mean, one death is better than two, right?"
"Well, anyway, I need to get going now. You know, don't wanna be caught by Max or Shorter who're guarding you like a princess." I loosened my grip on his hand, slid my hand out of his, took a step back. "It was nice knowing you, Aslan. Really was." I took another step back, and another one till I reached the door, my back against it.
