Lisa was shivering despite the fact that the heat was turned on and she had wrapped herself in her favourite blanket and she was wearing one of Jean's sweaters. She blamed the awful storm that was wreaking havoc on the buildings outside. It had already been an hour but the rain did not let up; the shutters were banging furiously and rain pelted down hard on the room.
It was nearly midnight and Lisa was worried because it was so late but Jean was still not home. Since Jean was a workaholic, it was expected that she would return home late, but since she started a relationship with Lisa, she had made it a point to return home by 8 pm every night so they could eat dinner together.
Jean was always good with keeping her promise so it worried Lisa that Jean was not home yet.
'Maybe there was some really important work that held her up and with the storm it's difficult for her to come home.' Lisa reasoned with herself as she took a sip of her honey lemon tea.
Lisa's head abruptly turned towards the door when she heard the lock jiggle. She gently but hastily placed her tea on the coffee table before rushing to the door.
Just as she got there, the door opened to reveal a drenched Jean.
"Jean! What happened, are you okay?" Lisa asked worriedly. She rushed to the closet in the hallway to grab a towel before returning to Jean.
"What happened J-" Lisa's question died on her lips when she noticed something moving underneath Jean's coat.
"What is that, Jean?" Lisa asked, gesturing to Jean's stomach.
Jean gave Lisa a gentle smile before unzipping her coat. Lisa gasped when she saw a little black furball curled up against Jean.
"I'm sorry I was late, my love. My meeting ran a lot longer than anticipated and on my way back I heard this tiny thing call out."
Lisa rushed forward to wrap the tiny kitten in the towel before handing the bundle to Jean. Lisa went back to the closet to grab another towel for her girlfriend.
Lisa grabbed the kitten from Jean and handed her a towel instead. Jean gave Lisa a thankful smile as she began to dry herself off.
"I'm so glad you're okay, I was worried that something had happened to you." Lisa pouted.
Jean chuckled and pressed her cool lips to Lisa's cheek. "I'm alright, thank you for worrying Lisa."
Lisa snaked her hand to the back of Jean's head and guided their lips together. "I will never stop being worried about you."
The two lovers stared into each other's eyes, lost in their own thoughts about each other but the tiniest meow drew them out of their reverie.
They both glanced down to see the small kitten looking up at them with curiosity. Lisa and Jean looked at each other and started laughing.
"I think we have some food around here for the little munchkin." Lisa said, walking towards the kitchen.
Jean kicked off her boots and followed Lisa to the kitchen. Jean watched Lisa set the kitten on the kitchen counter. She grabbed a plate from the pantry and opened a can of fish. The kitten's nose crinkled at the smell of food. It squirmed it's way out of the towel and ran across the counter to plate and dove head first into the food.
Lisa chuckled to herself while Jean was frowning. "Poor thing, it's starving."
Lisa walked to Jean to snaked her arms around Jean's waist. "The darling doesn't even look two weeks old; it must have lost it's mother."
Lisa watched Jean's frown deepen and her forehead crease in contemplation.
"Jean, would you like to keep him?" Lisa asked, an understanding smile on her face.
Jean gave Lisa a shy smile and nodded. "I would love to have this little darling join our family!" Lisa gushed, pressing a kiss to Jean's cheek.
Jean's cheeks warmed at hearing Lisa call them a family but she wholeheartedly agreed with that description. Her and Lisa were a family and their family just got bigger.
