Sucrose frowned into her workbook when she heard the hurtful words coming from a few citizens behind her. She was seated at a table in front of the Good Hunter. She was mulling over a few of her notes and enjoying a nice cool iced tea when her keen ears picked up the words of a group of girls from behind her.
"She is such a nerd." One whispered.
"No wonder she has no friends...her nose is always buried in that dumb book." Another one replied.
"How in the names of the archons is Captain Eula with her out of all people? That little freak must have used her alchemy magic to control Captain Eula's mind or something." A third whispered disdainfully.
Sucrose clenched her fist and her eyes welled up with tears. 'That's not even how alchemy works!' Sucrose screamed in her head.
"Why would someone as strong as Captain Eula be in a relationship with someone as weak as her? No one is going to take the Captain seriously." Someone said hautly.
Sucrose couldn't take one more second of this abuse so she quickly closed her book and threw some coins on the table before running out of there. This wasn't the first time she heard such hurtful comments from people. She knew when Eula came out about their relationship, it would cause them trouble down the line. At times like these, Sucrose always found herself going to the same place to get away from all those voices.
Her eyes were blurred by her tears but she still managed to stumble her way through the whispering woods and passed the trees to a little secluded beach to the west of Starfell. There was a little cave hidden by a few rock formations.
She curled up in the dark and damp hiding spot. Her head pressed against her knees and quiet sobs bounced off the walls. She had warned Eula that people would judge their relationship harshly. Sucrose knew that she was Eula's weakness and everyone would be able to see that. She knew that no one would be able to comprehend why someone as strong and important as Eula would be in a relationship with her of all people.
But Eula assured her it wasn't true and that no one would think like that. Eula assured her that even if they did, she wouldn't care because she loved Sucrose that much. Although Sucrose was skeptical at the time, Eula's sweet words and her even sweeter embrace calmed Sucrose down. But almost immediately after they made their relationship public, there was gossip floating around Mondstadt. Sucrose didn't know if Eula had heard any of it but she certainly did.
The gossipers were smart to not talk smack about Sucrose when Eula was around though. They made sure that Sucrose was isolated so only she could hear all their hurtful words. Sucrose was too ashamed to tell Eula about the verbal abuse she's been receiving. She knew in her heart that Eula would exact revenge on anyone that badmouthed her and that would make people resent Sucrose even more than they already did. It was something Sucrose couldn't risk because she was worried that things would escalate beyond simple verbal jabs.
Sucrose's thoughts started taking a depressing turn. What if this gossip reached Eula's ears and finally made her realize that she made a mistake this whole time? Sucrose couldn't bear the thought of Eula dumping her. The blue-haired woman made Sucrose feel so happy, secure, and confident whenever they were together. Sucrose evolved from a shy little meek girl to a confident woman around Eula. She loved every second she spent with the captain and her heart wouldn't be able to bear it if Eula decided Sucrose wasn't enough for her. This thought made Sucrose cry even harder.
In her teary state, Sucrose didn't hear the sound of footsteps crunching on the sand. Not until a figure blocked the little bit of sunlight that streamed through the cave opening. Sucrose looked up to see who had disturbed her crying session and her heart pumped painfully in her chest when she locked eyes with the familiar face of Eula.
Eula's eyes softened when she saw how vulnerable Sucrose looked. She knelt in front of the girl and pulled her into a tight hug. Sucrose didn't return the hug. She instead pressed her face into Eula's shoulder and cried even harder. Eula ran a soothing hand up and down Sucrose's back while whispering soft words in her ear.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Eula asked when Sucrose's crying died down into little hiccups.
"I-I...I didn't want y-you to think I'm weaker than I already am." Whispered Sucrose.
Eula frowned and pulled back from Sucrose. "And who said I thought you were weak?"
Sucrose looked down and mumbled. "Many people in Mondstadt seem to think so."
"Tch..." Eula grunted. "Don't listen to those jealous morons. If only they took the time to get to know you then they'd realize you're anything but weak."
Sucrose shook her head. "But it's true...compared to you I am weak. T-that can ruin your reputation! Everyone knows you're a strong captain and w-what if being with m-me m-makes people doubt you?" Sucrose's eyes began to fill with tears again.
Eula sighed. She firmly but gently gripped Sucrose's chin and guided her until she was looking in her eyes instead of the ground. "Since when have I given a damn about my reputation? If I gave a shit about what other people thought of me then I wouldn't have joined the Knights."
Sucrose closed her eyes and frowned. It was true...Eula was never one to care what other people thought about her. She had her fair share of doubt and hate from her clan as well as the citizens who believed she was only in the Knights to overthrow them for her clan.
Sucrose shook her head and hugged Eula tightly. She was clearly overthinking it and her catastrophic thinking made her emotionally overwhelmed.
"I'm sorry..." Sucrose whispered into Eula's shoulder. "I-I wasn't thinking straight...I just heard those girls' comments and it set me off."
Eula rolled her eyes even though Sucrose couldn't see. "Those dumbasses got what they deserved for bad-mouthing you like that." Eula grumbled.
Sucrose pulled back abruptly. "W-what do you mean?"
Eula smirked at her little girlfriend. "I was on my way to find you when I overheard their ignorant words. You had run off so quickly but I don't blame you for that. I taught them a lesson they deserved and they won't be bothering you again. And if they do..." Eula grumbled threateningly.
Sucrose was so embarrassed that Eula had witnessed her hasty exit like that.
"Promise me the next time someone speaks badly about you, you come to me."
Sucrose hesitated but she responded nonetheless. "Okay...but you have to promise me that you'll listen to what I have to say about them instead of hurting them right off the bat."
Eula mumbled something incoherently but she nodded. "Fine. If that makes you feel better."
"T-thank you." Sucrose whispered.
"Do you want to stay here for a while? I finished my duties, that's actually why I was coming to find you."
Sucrose nodded. "I think I need a break." She whispered tiredly. After all the crying and worrying she did, her energy was absolutely drained and that was obvious to Eula. Eula adjusted their position so she leaned against the walls of the cave. She cradled Sucrose in her lap and gently pressed Sucrose's face into her chest.
"I had put in a request for a week vacation, Jean just approved my request today. Would you like to go away somewhere, just the two of us?" Eula murmured into Sucrose's soft hair.
Sucrose let out a great big yawn. "Yeah..." She whispered tiredly.
Eula chuckled and softly shook her head. She ran her hand lovingly over Sucrose's hair over and over again. It made the girl drowsier by the second until her even breathing filled the small cave.
Eula's eyes drifted down to her thigh and she sneered when she saw a single piece of blonde hair on her clothing. She flicked the offensive strand off her person and thought back to that group of pathetic bullies. The next time they say anything bad about her sweet Sucrose, she'll make sure to do worse than just chopping their hair off - that was a promise.
