It has been nearly 2 weeks since Sucrose made a new friend in Amber. She still couldn't quite believe that her shy and quiet self had befriended someone who was the complete opposite of her. Amber was so outgoing and kind to everyone she meets - stranger or not.
What was even more unbelievable to Sucrose was the fact that she was going on her first vacation ever and with Amber of all people! She did not know the exact details of this journey - she left it completely up to Amber who had promised to be the best guide ever.
Sucrose was out standing outside the gate, nervously waiting for Amber. Sucrose jumped in fright when a hand suddenly landed on her shoulder. She turned around and saw Amber looking at her with an apologetic face.
"Oops! I'm so sorry Sucrose, I didn't mean to startle you." Sucrose frantically waved her hands in front of her.
"O-oh no need to apologize, it's okay Amber."
Amber smiled at her shy friend. It was difficult for Amber to fathom how anyone could be as shy as Sucrose but Amber made it her own personal goal to bring Sucrose out of her shell a little - something she hoped to do during their trip.
"Here you are, Sucrose." Amber said, handing Sucrose a large red backpack. Since Sucrose did not know where Amber was taking them, Amber had been the one to pack her essentials.
"It's still a surprise though so don't peek in there!" Amber said. Sucrose nodded and promised she wouldn't ruin the surprise. She noticed that Amber had a similar backpack to hers but it was twice as large.
"Are ya ready to head out, Sucrose?" Amber asked excitedly.
Sucrose barely had the chance to nod before Amber grabbed Sucrose's hand and dragged her down the bridge. Sucrose trailed behind Amber and her eyes were glued to their intertwined hands. Sucrose learned that Amber really liked holding hands because in the last few instances where they hung out, Amber always held her hand. Sucrose didn't say anything because it honestly looked like it was second nature to Amber and it's not like Sucrose really minded. She kind of liked holding Amber's hands...they were soft.
Sucrose looked up from their hands when Amber asked her a question. "How was your day?"
Sucrose smiled. "I-it was good...I-I made a new discovery today."
Amber smiled happily at Sucrose. "That's amazing!" She exclaimed. "What was the discovery?"
Sucrose felt warmth bloom in her chest. Amber was one of the few people who actually seemed like they genuinely cared about Sucrose and her alchemy. "W-well...remember the mist flowers you helped me collect?" Amber nodded.
"W-well I...I exposed it to some cryo elemental energy for about a week and the flower seemed to have grown double in size. The flower's corolla has also hardened significantly and the radius of it's frost aura has also increased. I have a second mist flower that is being exposed to geo energy...it's only been exposed for 5 days. I'll check in on it again in 2 days to see how it is but it seems there has been no obvious change."
Amber's smile widened. It was obvious to her that over the last couple weeks, Sucrose has been talking more and more. It made Amber really happy to know that Sucrose was beginning to feel more comfortable.
"H-how about you, Amber? How was your day?"
"Fantastic! I went on a nice run this morning and cleared out two more hilichurl camps by noon. It was a really productive morning and I feel great about it."
Sucrose smiled at her hard-working friend. "T-that sounds awesome. The city is very lucky to have you keeping them safe."
Amber squeezed Sucrose's hand in thanks. "You're too kind, Sucrose!"
