Jean read the handwritten letter in her hand over and over again with a small smile on her face. A knock on her door grabbed her attention.
"Come in." She said to the person on the other side of the door.
The door opened and Kaeya stepped through with a big smile on his face. "Good afternoon Grand Master Jean." He said with a wink.
Jean rolled her eyes and stood up. "Thank you for coming Kaeya."
Kaeya waved his hand. "Not a problem."
Jean grabbed her jacket and slipped it on. "Do you have any questions before I leave?" She asked, praying that Kaeya didn't have anything to ask.
Kaeya crossed his arms and smirked. "It's all good, Jean. Just go enjoy yourself and don't worry. The Knights and I can take care of things for a week. Don't tell me you have no faith in us?"
Jean shook her head and chuckled. "Just making sure. Thank you so much again for this."
Jean slipped the letter into her pocket and patted Kaeya appreciatively on the back before leaving the headquarters. She had a spring in her step as she made her way home to get some last minute travelling items. She threw her travel pack over her back and made her way out of the city.
Jean travelled for a better part of the day and set up camp when the sun started to go down. A warm fire burned in front of her. Jean held a fish skewer over the flame and watched it cook. A delicious aroma wafted through her nose.
The sound of a twig breaking had Jean pulling over her sword. She stood in the direction of the sound with her sword held in front of her.
"Is that anyway to greet me?" An amused voice asked, stepping out of the dark line of trees.
"W-what are you doing here?" Jean was surprised. She quickly put her sword back in it's sheath and walked to her visitor. She knew she was close to the border of Liyue but she didn't realize that Ningguang would meet her all the way out here.
Ningguang laughed. "You're not excited to see me?" She wrapped Jean up in a tight hug.
"No, no of course I'm excited to see you but you didn't have to come out so far. I would've reached our rendezvous point in the morning."
Ningguang shrugged. "Well I was impatient. I haven't seen you in months, Jean, can you blame me for wanting to see you sooner than tomorrow?"
Jean's smile softened and she kissed Ningguang's lips. "I've missed you so much. Those letters get boring you know?"
Ningguang pulled back and smiled at Jean. The small amount of light from the fire illuminated Jean's face so Ningguang could see all the soft features she missed.
"They do get old. Sometimes I wished we didn't have the jobs that we did so we could spend more time together." Jean threw her head back and laughed at Ningguang's confession. She shook her head in amusement. "You and I both know we love our job too much to give up on them."
Ningguang shrugged her shoulders in reply. "Oh dear...did I ruin your dinner Jean?" Jean followed Ningguang's gaze and saw her cooked fish skewer laying on the grass.
Jean shook her head and grabbed Ningguang's hand. "I caught extra, don't worry about it. Have you eaten yet?" Jean led Ningguang to her sleeping bag.
"If you don't mind, I would love a fish." Jean nodded and got to work skewering two more fish. She worked in peaceful silence and Ningguang was happy to just stare and appreciate Jean. It's been so unbelievably long since they saw each other in person so Ningguang took her sweet time taking in all of Jean's movements.
Jean turned to Ningguang and smiled sweetly at her. "Enjoying the view?" She teased.
Ningguang looked Jean in the eyes and smiled back. "I always enjoy the view if it's you." Jean's smile faltered and even under the faint light of the fire, Ningguang could make out the subtle blush on her face.
"H-here you go." Jean murmured. Ningguang took the fish appreciatively and smiled at how cute Jean looked when she was embarrassed. This was a drastic contrast to the confident and self-assured leader that she was.
"Thank you Jean." They ate their food silently, just appreciating the other's company. They discard the bones and burnt sticks to the side and lay beside each other under the starlit skies.
"Will everything be okay in Mondstadt while you're here?" Ningguang asked.
Jean nodded. "Yes, I have faith in Kaeya and the Knights. I planned my absence with them weeks in advance, they are well prepared for this."
"Fantastic. One week of uninterrupted time with you is all I want." Ningguang turned to her side and made out slowly with Jean.
Jean pulled back and sighed blissfully. "And will things in Liyue be okay?"
Ningguang propped her head up on her hand. "Ganyu will take care of everything, I have the utmost faith in her."
There were many times when Jean wished she had an assistant as diligent as Ganyu. Maybe then she could allocate some of her work and find more time to spend with Ningguang. While it wasn't the most ideal having to travel nearly 2 days to see her, it was still worth it.
The two of them had signed a contract between their nations nearly 2 years ago and they would alternate travel to each other's nations once a month. During their visits and in between their meetings, the two started getting to know each other a little more. And soon they decided it was worth getting into a relationship. While it had it's up and downs like any long-distance relationship, the two weren't willing to give up on each other.
Jean smiled up at Ningguang and caressed her flawless skin. "I'm thankful we each have such a supportive group of workers."
Ningguang nodded in agreement. Ningguang absent mindedly played with Jean's soft hand. "I was thinking...I have an abundance of employees and they're all very competent. Perhaps I could spread more of my work amongst them and stay in Mondstadt for more than a week. How does that sound, Jean?"
Jean was surprised to say the least. "Really?" She asked disbelieving.
Ningguang nodded. "Of course. I don't joke about things when it comes to you." Jean's eyes teared up a little at the thoughtful plan.
Jean rubbed her hand up and down Ningguang's thigh. "If it's okay with your staff and okay with you, then I would love having you in Mondstadt for more than just a week."
"There's still quite a bit of planning I need to do for that to happen but it will be done. For now though, let's focus on this week." Ningguang cupped the back of Jean's head and pulled their lips together. Ningguang dipped her tongue into Jean's warm mouth. Their tongues danced against each other. Ningguang kissed the corner of Jean's mouth, down the side of her jaw and to her neck.
Jean closed her eyes and sighed happily while Ningguang moved her nose up and down Jean's neck. Ningguang felt Jean shiver against her body. She drew the beautiful blonde against her and pulled the sleeping bag around them before zipping them up in a tight cocoon of warmth.
Jean nuzzled her nose against Ningguang's collarbone. "I can't wait to spend the next week with you...just the two of us in a little cabin." Jean lightly kissed Ningguang's shoulder.
"I agree. I'm going to make every second with you count."
Jean hummed happily. "I love you."
Ningguang hugged Jean tighter. "I love you too."
