The sound of a hammer hitting a nail echoed through the candle lit funeral parlour. Hu Tao wiped the sweat from her forehead before continuing again. It was well past midnight and she was working late at the funeral parlour. Her business had been booming lately and there were more demands for caskets. Her business also made their own caskets just to keep things cheaper and she was also able to deliver caskets with higher quality than most suppliers.
Hu Tao had sent most of her employees home at the regular time. However, she opted to stay a lot later to get a head start on tomorrow's agenda. She was the boss of this business so she had to ensure she worked harder than anyone else to show her leadership and prove her commitment.
She hammered the last nail into the wooden board and sighed in relief. The frame was finally done and now she just needed to add on the inside lining and outside plating. Tomorrow, her team can do the detailing while she meets with her clients to plan the funerals.
Hu Tao glanced over her shoulder when she heard a door creak. Most people would jump in fright but after being in this business for so long and seeing her fair share of spiritual beings, she had nerves of steel.
Hu Tao's eyes widened slightly at her visitor. "What are you doing here? It's late, you should be sleeping!"
Yanfei crossed her arms and pouted. "I can say the same to you. It's almost 3 am, what in the names of the archons are you doing working so late?"
Hu Tao sighed and leaned against the casket frame. "We had a sudden influx of clients this week so we have to work overtime to get the caskets made as soon as possible. A lot of the clients would like to begin preparations for the funerals as soon as possible."
Yanfei frowned when she noticed the tired weariness in Hu Tao's eyes. Despite her morbid career, Yanfei always knew Hu Tao to be a happy and quirky woman but seeing her tired and serious was staggering. Yanfei didn't like Hu Tao working herself so hard but she knew it was needed. Hu Tao always prided herself on working harder than her employees to set an example. Her hard-working nature was what attracted Yanfei to Hu Tao in the first place. Hu Toa working overtime was not an unusual occurrence. There were several times in the past where Hu Tao would stay at the funeral parlor overnight because she had so much work to do and not enough time to go home to rest. Yanfei hated it because it meant that the bed wasn't as warm with Hu Tao's body in it.
"You should go home, I'll be back in a couple hours." Hu Tao said. She turned around to grab the material she needed to start creating the shell of the casket. When she turned around she was surprised to see Yanfei pulling up a chair.
"What are you doing?"
Yanfei sat in the chair and pulled out a dossier. She nonchalantly pulled out a few files and perused them much to the confusion of Hu Tao.
"What are you doing, you weirdo. You should go home and get some sleep!"
Yanfei looked up from her lap and regarded Hu Tao with a bright smile. "I'm not going home until you are, so you better get to work."
Hu Tao puffed out her cheeks. "You're crazy! You have a lot of meetings tomorrow, you need your rest."
Yanfei clicked her tongue. "The sooner you get back to work the sooner I'll get to rest."
Hu Tao pouted as she walked away. She flicked the lights on and the parlor was bathed in light again. She normally liked working in the dark under the candle light but she didn't want Yanfei to strain her eyes reading her documents in the dimly lit room. The two worked in companionable silence for the next few hours. Hu Tao hammered loudly away at the casket but Yanfei didn't seem to mind. She was lost in her documents, her eyes darted across the documents reading each line intently.
Hu Tao set her tools down and stretched her arms above her head. She let out a great big yawn, she immediately felt the exhaustion from the long night settle over her body.
"Alrighty, I finished all that I can do tonight. Are you ready to go home?" Hu Tao chirped. She frowned when she didn't hear a response. She turned around and her frown deepened. Yanfei had fallen asleep in her chair. Her hands still gripped her documents but her head bent forward and light snores came from her mouth.
"Dang it, you silly girl, I told you you should've just gone home and slept." Hu Tao muttered as she knelt in front of Yanfei.
"You finished earlier than I thought." Yanfei muttered much to the surprise of Hu Tao.
"You...weren't sleeping this whole time?"
Yanfei let out a great big yawn. "Nope, just resting my eyes. Are you ready to go home?" Yanfei neatly placed her documents back in the dossier.
Hu Tao nodded. She reached her hand out and flicked Yanfei's forehead with force.
"Hey!" Yanfei exclaimed. "What was that for?" She grumbled while rubbing her injury.
"Just trying to knock some sense into you. Next time I work late you really shouldn't stay with me until the sun rises; it's unhealthy for you."
Yanfei crossed her arms over her chest in annoyance. "Says you! You're the one that works these absurd hours. You're not a machine Hu Tao, you need rest too."
"I do get rest! I usually sleep more during the day and get Zhongli to see my other appointments for me!" Hu Tao argued back.
Yanfei stood up and poked Hu Tao's cheek. "Let's just go home and sleep, I'm tired."
Hu Tao nodded in agreement. She locked up the parlor knowing that Zhongli had his own set of keys. If she didn't show up by 8 am, then her employees would know that she would be taking the day off. Her employees were rather self-sufficient so she wasn't worried.
Hu Tao hooked her arm around Yanfei's and they walked through the quiet early morning streets of Liyue back to their home. Store fronts were only beginning to open and birds were chirping.
"You're going to be hurting at your meetings later today." Hu Tao muttered. Yanfei giggled at Hu Tao's worry.
"I rescheduled my meetings for another day." She admitted. Yanfei wasn't ready for Hu Tao's abrupt stop so she was nearly tugged off her feet.
"Hey! Why'd you stop walking?" She exclaimed as she regained her balance.
"You planned this?" Hu Tao asked.
Yanfei shrugged her shoulders and gently tugged on Hu Tao's arms to get her walking again. "When you didn't come home by 8, I figured you were planning on pulling another all-nighter. I contacted my clients and asked them to reschedule, which they kindly did.
Hu Tao shook her head in disbelief. "You're crazy...more crazy than me if that's even possible."
Yanfei giggled. "I can't sleep without you." Yanfei admitted. Hu Tao stammered and blushed at Yanfei's confession. While she knew Yanfei often struggled to sleep without her, hearing Yanfei admit it always threw Hu Tao for a loop.
"So what...you're willing to stay awake the whole night with me just so you can sleep with me after the sun rises?" Hu Tao asked, disbelieving.
Yanfei nodded her head as she swayed her body from side to side in happiness. "Yep."
Hu Tao shook her head. "You're crazy...absolutely nuts!" Yanfei threw a smile in Hu Tao's direction.
"Crazy for you, yeah." Yanfei pressed a kiss to Hu Tao's cheek.
"Silly woman..." Hu Tao muttered with a blush.
