Jean held her coat over her head as she ran down the street. She saw the familiar purple sign in the distance and sped up her pace. She opened and closed the door with haste. The familiar ring of the bell above the door filtered through her ears.
Jean breathed out a sigh of relief. The rain had only started so she didn't get too wet. Thankfully, she wasn't as drenched as the first time she came to this quaint little cafe and thank goodness for that because she didn't want to bother her darling girlfriend by creating a mess for her to clean up.
"Oh Jean, did you get caught in the rain again?" Lisa's concerned voice carried through the cafe.
Jean looked up and smiled when she saw Lisa. "I got lucky this time, the rain only started." Jean turned to look out the glass. "I hope you have an umbrella with you otherwise we'll be camping out here tonight." Commented Jean.
Lisa giggled behind her hand. "I have an umbrella in my office darling but let's wait until the rain dies down a little."
"I actually have a favour to ask you." Said Lisa.
"Oh? What is it?" Jean asked, hanging her jacket over the back of a chair.
"I'm doing some recipe testing right now. Would you like to be my guinea pig?"
Jean chuckled. "I would love to Lisa. You know how much I love your cooking."
Lisa smiled happily and hooked her arm around Jean's, guiding them to the kitchen.
"Take a seat darling." Jean sat on a stool and rested her head against her hand. She watched with wonderment as Lisa practically danced around the kitchen. She looked so natural and elegant in this environment whereas Jean was a complete klutz. She always loved watching Lisa work.
Lisa did a lot of recipe testing after hours. Jean now had a habit of stopping by the cafe on her way home but it was always a late stop but she knew that Lisa would always be here even if the shop was considered closed. The two had established a good routine of walking each other home. Sometimes it would be Jean who escorted Lisa home and other nights it was vice versa.
Sometimes Jean wished they were headed in the same direction. She hated leaving in the opposite direction after they walked each other home. They had only been dating for 2 months but Jean could confidently say she was enamoured with the sexy cafe owner. She knew that Lisa felt the same as well.
While Lisa was putting the finishing touches to three plates of food, Jean was quickly working out a few solutions to her dilemma.
"Here you are darling."
Jean wore a big smile on her face. "Wow, everything looks amazing Lisa. What did your genius brain come up with this time."
Lisa giggled at the compliment. "The first dish is a new brunch idea. It's a smoked salmon breakfast bowl with slices of smoked Norwegian salmon, hash browns, wilted spinach, and an egg cooked to the choice of the customer. So they can ask for scrambled, poached, soft/hard boiled, or sunny side up."
Jean's mouth was salivating because smoked salmon was one of her favourite foods. The saltiness and smooth texture of the fish was enticing.
Lisa knew Jean liked poached eggs with a dash of salt and paprika so she did just that. She watched with slight nervousness as Jean popped the egg and allowed the creamy golden yolk to spill over the contents of the dish.
Jean took one bite, then two bites, then three bites. She practically wolfed down the bowl much to Lisa's delight. If Jean ever finished one of her dishes, then Lisa knew it was a real winner.
