Flashback: Wednesday, 01:25, Seattle, Washington

"You know, Taru, if you tried to smile once in a while you might get a little more attention~" Lydia purred in your ear as we walked arm in arm down the crowded strip to our next destination. Rolling your eyes, shuffling to compensate for the weight of your already two sheets to the wind friend, you chuckled.

"Bold of you to assume I want attention, Lyds." you smirk coyly, turning down a familiar side street that should lead back to the hotel. You considered getting an Uber, but at this rate, Lydia would soon vomit up her weight in booze; it wasn't worth the risk. Melissa giggled, holding Lydia's other arm around her shoulder.

"Well, at least we can say our last night in the States was a success, right girls?" Melissa beamed at you, earning a scoff.

How you ended up in a trio with two happy-go-lucky socialites would forever be one of life's mysteries. You were crass, blunt, rude, a troublemaker, and gave an aura of 'Don't fuck with me' while the peppy brunette slung around your shoulder, and the ever glowing blonde to her left were the personification of social butterflies, but you would't have it any other way. The three of you were the waves of I-Island, since the Academy. Melissa and you rivaled for years, bouncing between first and second of your class, while Lydia always remained seated in the third seat. Every project, every final the three of you dominated the competition. Even after the academy, the trio remained attached at the hip, earning internships, assistant positions, and research opportunities through Melissa's father, Dave Shield. You truly were one of the lucky ones. Busting your ass day in and day out, studying, retaining all the information you could, quickly on your way to being one of the star quirk geneticists of your time. You had letters behind your name that left people speechless and unsure of how to address you in public. Can't say you didn't like it, you always loved making others uncomfortable in your presence, part of the reason you became so enamoured with the drunk duo beside you; they were never phased by you, showering you with nothing but love and adoration. You didn't deserve these idiots, but you would go to hell and back for them.

"Are we almos' here?" Lydia sighed as she was getting increasingly heavier, stumbling more frequently as you trekked on.

"Just a bit longer, Lyds," you cooed, reassuring her that rest was just on the horizon. At least, that's what you thought.

"I wouldn't give the girl false hope, Doll Face." A deep voice echoed from behind, chilling up your spine slowly, as if caressing every nerve ending in an oddly seductive way. You went rigid.

What the actual fuck?!

Turning your head to glance behind, a shadowy figure loomed in the dark portions of the street. You tried to swallow, but your throat felt dry. Picking up the pace, you chose to muscle forward and not interact with the menacing aura behind you. Bad vibes were bad vibes, and with Melissa being quirkless, and Lydia being too intoxicated to know her ass from a hole in the ground, the odds of you coming out on top while protecting these two were not in your favor.

However, it seems your friends hadn't got the memo.

"Who are you calling Doll Face, SIR" Melissa snarked, turning on her heel to verbally berate the man who she felt was nothing more than a drunk cat caller.

"Melissa!" You hissed, stopping dead in your tracks, trying to grab the blonde's arm to wheel her in the opposite direction, "now is not the time to play social justice warrior" you shot through clenched teeth. Your fight or flight response was going crazy, your quirk was vibrating, itching under your skin.

"Now, now, Doll, don't be so harsh on your friends. We just want to have a conversation," you could hear the sneer in his voice.

This isn't good. I need to get them out of here.
