Bakugou's POV

I stood in my office, fidgeting nervously with my phone, thumb hovering over the contact icon on the screen. I ran my free hand through my hair, shaking it out while trying to compose myself. I hadn't slept well at all. Every time I closed my eyes another memory slapped me across the face. Was that one of the drawbacks of her quirk? Once she opened the floodgates they wouldn't close? It was all starting to click together. Piece by piece I was slowly recapturing my childhood. I hadn't realized how much her leaving so suddenly had impacted me. I didn't know all that stuff had happened to her. I promised her I would keep her safe, yet I couldn't have done anything different.

I was going to drive myself insane. I needed to talk to someone. Fuck, I already regret this.

With a growl, I tap the call button, holding the phone up to my ear as I listen to the ringing.

"Well isn't this a surprise, Katsuki. You finally have time for your Mother?"

"Shut up, Hag. I will hang up this phone right now." I growl into the phone, only to be met with yelling.

"Katsuki Bakugou, you will stop calling me HAG! Can't we just have a normal conversation, you ungrateful brat?!"

I groan, letting my forehead smack against the glass window. "FINE! Look, I called you because I need to talk to you, so can you stop fucking yelling for once and listen to me?"

Silence.

"Katsuki... of course. Sweetie, what's the matter? Why are you upset?"

"Mom... What can you tell me about Hotaru Kobayashi?"

The conversation with the Old Hag was more useful than I had originally thought it would go. After some prodding, explaining that she was currently staying with me because of hero related circumstances, the little memory exercise we had, and reassurance that I was alright she willingly answered all my questions.

Hotaru had been put in the same daycare and head start program as me. Apparently, her first day I had hopped over to her, told her that she had a stupid name, and from that moment on never let her out of my sight. The Hag had met her parents a few times, usually after she would see her come home with me and be riddled with new bruises. She had been able to get her parents to agree to letting her watch Hotaru after daycare and stay with us often. Her Dad worked long days and was rarely home, while her mother was often strung out at home. The age gap between Hotaru and her sisters led to all of them having moved out by the time we started school.

When her mother had taken off with her, everyone in town, including her father, had been under the impression that both were kidnapped. With her mother's lifestyle choices and drug use, it wasn't an outlandish idea. Nearly six months after their disappearance they had found Hotaru after an accident left her mother's boyfriend dead and her mother in serious condition. The entire family had relocated to Niigata Prefecture, only for the news of her mother dying due to a gunshot wound had circulated several months later.

"She can't remember anything. She doesn't know anything about me, who I am. I don't know how to tell her. I can't believe I forgot everything," I was beating myself up, I knew that, but I couldn't help it. I felt like I had truly failed her, letting her fade away in some pathetic, immature fit because she had left me. It wasn't even her fault. She was stolen.

"You can't be too aggressive with this sort of thing, Katsuki. She has to come to terms on her own. It may be better just to try and build a new relationship with her rather than trying to pick up where you left off. After all, it has been 16 years since you last saw her. You're both different people."
